On the southern bank of the river Schinkel in Amsterdam stands a thoroughly renovated office building that bridges the past and future. Since its transformation in 2024, the structure – originally designed by Arthur Staal in 1962 – has gained renewed significance through a revitalisation and extension by Office Winhov, commissioned by Flow Development. Among Staal's most iconic works is the Shell Tower, now known as the A'DAM Tower.

In 2020, in the midst of the first wave of lockdowns due to the pandemic, the municipality of Amsterdam announced its strategy for recovering from this crisis by embracing the concept of the “Doughnut Economy.” The model is developed by British economist Kate Raworth and popularized through her book, “Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist”, released in 2017. Here, she argues that the true purpose of economics does not have to equal growth. Instead, the aim is to find a sweet spot, a way to balance the need to provide everyone with what they need to live a good life, a “social foundation” while limiting our impact on the environment, “the environmental ceiling.” With the help of Raworth, Amsterdam has downscaled this approach to the size of a city. The model is now used to inform city-wide strategies and developments in support of this overarching idea: providing a good quality of life for all without putting additional pressure on the planet. Other cities are following this example.

The tower volumes, roughly 40 meters high, are striking for the continuous balconies that surround each level over a recessed ground floor. The girdle of balconies merges the urban flair of high-rise living with the qualities of generous garden space associated with a family house.

It was a unique project for this fierce modernist who had a challenge in forming a relationship in the façades between two historical adjacent buildings. The result is a singular office building that is modern while still referencing the past – albeit abstractly.

Inspired by legendary Berlin department store architecture, Max Dudler has redesigned the facades for the northern part of the Tegel Quartier. With two staggered tower superstructures and the motif of cascading facade pilasters, the architecture becomes a new focus of attraction for this revitalized pedestrian zone. The project, commissioned by HGHI Holding GmbH, is part of an undertaking that redefines Gorkistrasse – set at the heart of Berlin’s Reinickendorf district – as an urban shopping street. The entire project will reach completion this year, including the southern part, also designed by Max Dudler. Circa two-thirds of the new shops have already opened. The Rautenbach and Pechtold architecture offices have been commissioned with the planning and execution of the interiors.

Located at the intersection of several vineyards on the Kappelberg above the village of Fellbach, Belvedere is a project for “16 Stationen” (16 stations), which is a part of the Remstal Gartenschau 2019. Set in a place with a great panoramic view over the valley it underlines the particularity of the surrounding as well as the transformation process within the following ten years during the intervention.
