The Flinders University Health and Medical Research Building (HMRB) is designed as an extension of its landscape, drawing inspiration from the ochre outcrops of the Adelaide Hills. Positioned along the pedestrian route from the rail terminus to the university, the architecture emerges organically from the terrain, mirroring the geological layers of Rainbow Country. The sloping site's 14-metre fall informed the design, creating a structure that feels embedded in the land's history and contours.

We began by evaluating the constraints of our previous studio while developing a strategy focused on a flexible work culture, new technologies, and an increased commitment to sustainability.

This brick and glass extension fits snugly onto the back of a double-fronted weatherboard worker’s cottage in Clifton Hill. Designed to capture light from the north, as well as views of an existing bottle brush tree to the south, the layout responds to both the site and the family’s desire for future flexibility. With laneway access at the rear, a double-storey garden studio nestles into the back of the site, providing a green backdrop to views from the calm spaces within.

Bellbird House / Bower Architecture

After a long search, our clients Cameron and Nicole found a property in the Bellbird Area of Blackburn, a classified National Trust area that has been protected against significant development since the 1960s. The Bellbird Area is a suburban bush setting, connected to the Blackburn Bush Corridor a critical habitat for birdlife and animals. The streetscapes retain a peaceful ambiance with no footpaths, dominated by native vegetation. The site featured 41 existing established native trees, all of which were preserved in the creation of this home nestled amongst, and suffused by the natural landscape.

After a long search, our clients Michelle and Peter found an ideal site to realize their vision for a house that would preserve a life of privacy and connection to nature (something they had enjoyed for forty years on the family farm), without the unsustainable workload. The brief for a timeless and tranquil home filled with natural light, warmth, and texture also prioritized accessibility and low maintenance to allow aging in place.

The Grampians Peaks Trail (GPT) Stage 2 offers a world class hiking experience over 160km of pristine Gariwerd wilderness. The trail traverses the lands of three traditional owners being Barengi Gadjin Land Council, Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation and Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and includes three regional council jurisdictions. The project includes 10 sites along the GPT plus the group site of Stony Creek but excludes Stage 1 at Bugiga, undertaken previously by others.

The challenge with this 1920’s Californian Bungalow was to create a l ight and serene, yet robust and hardwearing family home. A limited palette of pale, raw materials ensures the viewer has minimal distract ions when moving through The White House. By using a limited palette of a minimal number of light , natural materials the viewer has minimal distractions when moving through the space. The features become the grand double height voids, internal atrium garden, and the textured furniture and art that were careful l y selected to complement the pale, pastel tones of the house.

Driven by the local vernacular of gently gabled houses, a sensitive building form is nestled between its neighbours. Two entry experiences - the most apparent an informal outdoor shower which celebrates the ritual of the beach return, while a more discreet side entry leads into a central courtyard at the heart of the house.

North light, south light, warm light and cool light – the diversity of skylights mean they can illuminate any space. Both a window and a ceiling, the hybrid nature of a skylight enables it to be a key element used in architectural spaces. The cool light of a north skylight is instrumental in creating a space to focus and work, while its south-facing counterpart lights up a space with that golden glow. Through its flexibility also come opportunities for expression, from its shape to its angle. Is a skylight a ribbon weaving through a roof panel?
