Nestled amidst a sprawling one-acre farmland on the outskirts of Erode, Tamil Nadu, lies The Croft, an idyllic weekend retreat. The property enjoys a serene location in close proximity to a bird sanctuary, surrounded by lush farmlands and meandering streams. The clients, a young couple, sought a two-bedroom recreational house with spaces to host parties and intimate gatherings. They desired the house to have a significant connection to the surrounding greenery while maintaining privacy and security from the neighbouring farms. In response, our design approach was to create an inward-looking house with large semi-open areas to enjoy the outdoors and engage in gardening & bird-watching, which fosters connection with one another.

Zero40 Brewery is located in the heart of Hyderabad's software district. The design seamlessly combines the essence of an existing orchard with the vibrant social ambiance that guests would expect at a brewery. The site is a 1.2-acre rectangular plot with 10 mango trees and a neem tree. The design revolves around the client’s vision and the existing orchard, intentionally avoiding disturbing or pruning the trees. Specific areas were identified where the built structures could be placed, resulting in the creation of polygonal courtyards.

The Boulder Farmhouse: A Mud Haven in the Hills of Shoolagiri - Nestled amidst the landscapes of Shoolagiri, in a laidback village, lies a property that is a testament to sustainable living and architectural ingenuity. This site, deep in elephant country, presents a unique canvas for an architectural endeavor that is respectful of its environment. This three-quarter acre of land is surrounded by boulders and plantations that slope towards a water catchment area. This little sanctuary away from the bustling city of Bangalore is planned over a footprint of 2400 sq ft, snugly between boulders towards the North and South, opening towards a fruit plantation on the east. As the story goes, the name 'Boulder House' wasn't just a stroke of architectural branding but a nod to the very essence of its surroundings. It was as if the land itself had a say in the matter, with its majestic boulders and rugged terrain inspiring not just the design but also the moniker. Drawing upon the vernacular architecture, the design meticulously incorporates mud, stone, wood, and clay - materials that have been the cornerstone of construction in this region for generations.

Catering to an agriculturist's needs, our design-build project in rural Bengaluru began with a simple brief: to design a modest, four-bedroom dwelling for his extended family, following Vastu Shastra principles, on a south-facing 8,260-square-foot plot adjoining his farm. Upon our initial visit to the site, we were immediately captivated by two prominent features: the majestic peepul (Sacred Fig) trees located to the south and east of the plot and the revered Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, situated directly across from the site. The setting held immense potential for creating a serene sanctuary nestled amidst these natural and cultural landmarks.

Located in Karishma hills, with a beautiful layout on the fringes of the Turahalli forest, the site was the perfect locale for this with its majestic teak, mango, and coconut trees. These trees and the gentle topography of the site were also the perfect starting point for the design. The house is designed as a seamless extension of the natural landscape - respecting, enhancing, and celebrating the existing vegetation while creating a luxurious and sustainable living environment. The structure is positioned to maximize natural light and ventilation while minimizing the impact on the existing trees.

The Joshi House embodies an artistic articulation of volumes. The relationship between art and architecture is a dynamic symbiosis, an intricate dance where form, function, and aesthetics converge to create an immersive and meaningful built environment. At the core of this theory is the recognition that art and architecture are not separate entities but rather interconnected expressions, influencing and enriching one another. In this symbiotic relationship, architecture becomes a canvas for artistic expression.

In this Bengaluru home, located in an exclusive gated community in the eastern part of the city, our first impulse was to respond to the leafy neighborhood, especially the row of majestic Kadamba fruit trees on the road that flanks its north entrance. We were keen on a vocabulary of natural materials and an architectural expression that would gently step up from the street. The 100 ft long north boundary wall takes the form of a stone Jaali, crafted entirely out of local Sadharhalli stone by skilled masons. It is a contemporary reference to the liberal use of this stone as means of securing land in rural Karnataka. The repetitive vertical pieces of stone interlock into horizontal bands with tongue and groove joinery and an absence of mortar, referencing the age-old traditional techniques of stone building in the region. A central entrance portal with a yellow door and polished cement surround punctuates the Jaali and guides one into an entrance court and then to the main door.

Upon initial presentation of the site for the proposed international school, the captivating view along the principal east-west axis to the distant 'Haddina Kallu' hills influenced the design approach. Located in rural Karnataka, spanning 4 acres and situated off the National Highway NH75, the site features a tree-lined landscape sloping 30 feet towards the west. Working with the sloping terrain, the design was thoughtfully crafted as a series of interconnected levels. The central spine, which is open to the sky and runs linearly, is flanked by classrooms and offers framed views of the hills from both the reception area and classroom corridors.

On the southern periphery of the site stood a magnificent and ancient Raintree that influenced the spatial layout of this 4-bedroom house in Chennai. The tree, with its sculptural roots and the giant canopy, was a primary driver in determining the layout and design of the house. We wanted the tree to be omnipresent, so we created the entrance court around its roots and positioned the living room in such a way as to have direct views of it. The main compound wall on the street was designed with certain cutouts to accommodate some of its branches and roots.

Coming from different cultures and origins, the citizens began to wonder what post-independence India would stand for. The nation-builders now had the choice to carve out their own future, along with the responsibility to reclaim its identity - but what was India's identity? Was it the temples and huts of the indigenous folk, the lofty palaces of the Mughal era, or the debris of British rule? There began a search for a contemporary Indian sensibility that would carry the collective histories of citizens towards a future of hope.

A nature lover NRI chose to have a close-to-heart Holiday Home. Nestled in the famous Farmland of Kerala, on the flatlands of Palakkad Pass flanked by the Western Ghats on either side, lead to the conceptualization of a Holiday Home that can hold his family together during his vacations back in his homeland. The limited time frame gave birth to the idea of using steel structures for 80% of the built area.

‘Nagalingam Veedu’ in Tamil translates to the “House with the Nagalingam tree’. The sacred tree was planted by our clients’ family on this site in the late 1990s in their previous home, and the fragrant flowers resembling the hood of a snake have been offered in prayers by their family to lord Shiva ever since. While demolishing the old house and building anew, it was an important aspect of our client's brief to retain the tree in a prominent position in the garden.
