The ice cream shop functions as an exercise in branding through playfulness in retail and commercial spaces, a small architectural gesture designed to draw people in off the street or across the park. An area of high precipitation in the monsoons, and equal heat during the summers, the site changes remarkably from March to July, with the onset of the south westerly monsoons. Basalt the local black rock of the region is what this site was about.

With a stream running through the house, this retreat in Alibag is delicately woven into the landscape, alternately opening up and closing itself to the different characteristics of the site. A multitude of medicinal and fruit-bearing trees provide for an intimate ambiance and comfortable microclimate. Though seasonal, the streambed allows for an interesting landscape feature throughout the year. The house is placed on the banks of the stream where it makes a sudden S-curve. A short walk along the stream before entering the house builds up an element of anticipation. Like an organism trying to make the most use of its resources and surroundings, the house with its several limbs reaches out into the landscape making full use of the views within the site and dramatizes special moments: a beautiful tree, a view of the mountains beyond or the cascading stream during the monsoon rains. What started out as a Cartesian response to the site became deformed, stretched and pushed in.

Second homes are about creating an oasis from the hectic pace of urban city life. A site blessed with vegetation and seasonal lake provided the perfect setting for this project. At the entrance were a clump of trees that provided for a grand entry and also created just the necessary buffer for the house from the Main Street. The driveway snaked its way past the canopy of trees to the entrance/arrival court where you are received by a curved stone wall.

The house is designed with prime focus with landscape . This is a first climate oriented house plan. It has a summer garden and a winter garden. Here the plan forms "Z". Thus it creates two garden space on south side and north side, The south side garden is designed like a "forest " to help tree plantations to creat shadows on the building . This used of garden gets sun in morning till late evening , thus ideal to use in winter. Where north side garden has more lawn area , which has shadow of building in afternoon and evening . It gets good morning sun and than later part of a day is shaded . Thus it become summer garden. Ideal to use in hot and summer days.

We were approached by clients (who were more friends by now, having worked on multiple projects together over the years) to build for them a holiday house they could enjoy with friends over long weekends, away from Delhi, where they lived. The site is a privately owned hill, located amidst the Himalayan ranges near the cantonment town of Kasauli, which is a two hour drive from the northern city of Chandigarh (designed by Corbusier).

The courtyard house is designed with a grid of 7’x7’. The house has been designed in such a way hat all the living spaces and passage face open space and garden, which was also the main design concept since its inception, thus creating a central courtyard which holds the reflection pool making it a major design element. This also makes the design an introvert one, leaving garden at backside but still visible and accessible from all the rooms of house.
