The 5-level structure was erected in less than a month and the building, including the integrated fit-out for up to 100 staff, saw completion within 7 months.

“Wickham Point House" respectfully updates the modernist aesthetic established by renowned Queensland Architect James Birrell (Spring Hill Centenary Pools, Toowong Library) while giving the holiday house functionality for a multi-generational family. The original dwelling underwent a significant renovation by James Birrell in the 1960s. Out of respect for the quality of the inherited design, the approach was to treat the new intervention with a light hand. The simplicity and harmony of the original residence were highly valued by the client and architect and provided the underlying basis of the conceptual framework. Subtle interventions and enhancements were a priority.

Sorrel is a progressive extension and alteration to a small cottage on a sloping site in Paddington. The project explores the juxtaposition between historical context and contemporary architecture within a broader subtropical paradigm. In a somewhat controversial decision, the call was made to make a clear distinction between the small, original cottage and the new work, keeping their respective personalities distinct. The materials used are in stark contrast to the remnant cottage with a dominate use of concrete offering a deliberate counterpoint to the vernacular.

The formal expression of the home is defined by a timber skin of Australian hardwoods that mirrors the irregular shape of the site in plan form. This skin vacillates between permeability and solidity in its function and associated construction. The base of the house is grounded with the use of stone offering a resonant juxtaposition to the ephemeral top.
