Within this area lies Brazil's largest marine conservation unit, the Costa dos Corais Environmental Protection Area. The municipality of Maceió, Alagoas, is the only state capital located within this stretch, making it one of the few capitals in the world whose urban shoreline is surrounded by coral reefs with highly diverse marine life.
