The pillar has adorned many of the greatest monumental examples of Western architecture since antiquity, from the Doric columns of the Parthenon to the Corinthian capitals of the Pantheon portico. In the West, the legacies of these classical forms have permutated over the centuries and into modern times: the Doric columns of the Lincoln Memorial, the Ionic columns of the British museum portico, and the Villa Savoye’s pilotis are just a few examples of the classical column’s continued transformation and use over the last few centuries. Today, the round pillar continues to be used in modern design, both functionally and aesthetically. Below, we look into these elements in more detail, including their materials, construction, structural qualities, and several contemporary examples of their use.

After almost 50 years, the building was revitalized and expanded. In 2014, the workgroup ARGE agn leusmann / Tim Hupe Architekten was awarded the project. After several conversions over the past decades, the building is now once again used as a residential home – in accordance with its original purpose. The historic exterior façade is listed as part of an ensemble with the neighboring buildings and was restored in close accordance with monument protection. In the process, the conservatory was also renovated in line with the original design.

The natural green outdoor defines the design of the office building. The building becomes a "house in the clearing", embedded in a natural forest area. The homogeneity of the distinctive solitaire is broken up by generous window areas with delicate window profiles, giving it lightness and translucency.

Rivers have long been considered as Earth’s arteries, serving as the essence of urban communities as human settlements developed their shelters and crop beds around them. Centuries later, riverside architecture remained vital as these areas expanded beyond residential typologies, and harnessed dynamic mixed-use developments and public functions. As valuable as they may seem though, these landscapes come with the risk of unexpected floods, increased water levels, or complete droughts, which has forced architects to design built environments that are able to respond to these abrupt changes. So how were these settlements built in the past, and how has today’s urban densification and technological advancements influence the way they are built?

DMAA’s design for the new headquarters of Sparkasse Bremen emerged from an invited competition for the development of a site, which is close to Bremen University – at the junction between Universitätsallee and the motorway access road – and offered few clues to designers regarding the shaping of the urban context and the building morphology. The seemingly reserved, standalone building volume defines the location through the inviting gesture of its transparent base, which opens to its surroundings on three sides in the form of full-height glazing.

This partition creates on the one hand a strong identity of the whole ensemble as an urbanistic prelude for the development of the Baakenhafen, on the other hand generates urban qualities inside the building. Structure Special functions, such as the Start Up and HCU offices on the first floor, the access to the roof terrace with a connected office and meeting area on the seventh floor as well as a bar with a 360° view between the head of the building and the shed roof are located within the breaks sub- dividing the building.
