A result of sixty years of student lobbying, the Student Activity Center at the University of Texas at Austin is fundamentally a place built for and by the student body. The SAC challenges the traditional campus paradigm of a building performing a single dedicated function.

The Color Inside is a milestone in The University of Texas at Austin’s Landmarks public art collection. Located on the roof of the Student Activity Center, the project arose from the student body’s desire for a peaceful retreat at the Student Activity Center (SAC). The SAC serves as a highly active social and cultural center with amenities that include, amongst others, a ballroom, black box theater, auditorium, conference rooms, and offices for student organizations. Through an in-depth participatory design process, students played a pivotal role in defining the programmatic functions of the SAC and the role it would play on campus. As a result, internationally acclaimed artist James Turrell was commissioned to design a “Skyspace,” one of his renowned inhabitable artworks, in order to offer a space for quiet amidst the dynamic atmosphere of the SAC.

Lake House / Andersson Wise Architects

This structure, located on the steeply sloped bank of Lake Austin, is designed for downtime. A nearly mile-long path leads the visitor down the hill, over a suspension bridge constructed of individual segments strung onto cables that spans a ravine, and finally down to the boat house. The simple, elegant building rises above the water, resting on the surface like a water skater. And like the surface-skimming insect, this off-the-grid domicile exerts a minimal impact on its surroundings. Its structure, fabricated into a single framework of steel and barged to the site, is anchored into rock beneath the water. A floating carpenter shop was used to complete the construction from the water side.

Collector’s Loft / Poteet Architects

Designed for an art collector/artist, this loft occupies the top two floors and roof of a 1920s factory in downtown San Antonio. Both old structure and new interventions are rendered in white, emphasizing the textural contrast of the existing masonry and board-formed concrete with the new walls, luminous epoxy floors and lacquered cabinetry.
