Architecture has always centered on permanence and ephemerality. Defined by material conditions, how we build is closely tied to what we preserve and how we conceptualize the future. Furthering international cooperation in education, the arts, the sciences, and culture, UNESCO is an organization that continues to examine the relationship between history and growth, preservation, and change. As architecture, landscapes, and cities become threatened by the climate crisis and unrest, cultural context becomes paramount.

The textures and elementary forms of constructive systems, materials, and products, are exhibited and used in favor of the architectural concept, giving value to the functions that will be carried out in each building.

From showcases made with ceramic tiles to the sifted light created by expanded metal panels, passing through an ethereal polyester coating, Kuma understands the material as an essential component that can make a difference in architecture from the design stages. Next, we present 21 projects where Kengo Kuma masterfully uses construction materials.

Kengo Kuma (born 8th August, 1956) is one of the most significant Japanese figures in contemporary architecture. His reinterpretation of traditional Japanese architectural elements for the 21st century has involved serious innovation in uses of natural materials, new ways of thinking about light and lightness and architecture that enhances rather than dominates. His buildings don't attempt to fade into the surroundings through simple gestures, as some current Japanese work does, but instead his architecture attempts to manipulate traditional elements into statement-making architecture that still draws links with the area its built in. These high-tech remixes of traditional elements and influences have proved popular across Japan and beyond, and his recent works have begun expanding out of Japan to China and the West.

It was built by a team composed of municipal workers and volunteers from the village. It will provide accommodation for the walkers and the “Classe verte” school trip children who come every week to discover the treasures of the last peat bog in the Meurthe-et-Moselle region. The small covered yard raises the question of small wood sections and the theme of density in architecture.

This project is the result of the union between history and architecture, water and light, city and nature. We wish that the Besancon Art and Culture Center strike a chord with the environment by the fusion of the different scale of reading, from the details to the entire project, by blurring the limit between interior and exterior, to create a building able to enter in resonance with his environment: the hills, the river and the city of Besancon. The roof creates the link between the building and his environment and makes the project blatant. Semi-transparent, the roof symbolizes the fusion between built and not-built and act as camouflage when people discover it from the Citadelle which is height overlooking. It is an invitation to the citizen to gather below his protection. It symbolized the encounter between the city and the nature, the citizen and the riverbank, the public and the culture.

Architects Matthieu Gelin & David Lafon designed both an office building and pavilion on this site in Paris, France. The office building required two different programs; housing both RATP office space on the ground level and circus office space on the second floor, each function was defined by use of materials.

Located in a small village 10 kilometers south of Besançon, the main town of the region « Franche Comté », this house was built far from the center of the village, up on the hill which dominates the river « Loue » and beneficiates of a clear and wide view . It was made for a single grandma' who takes care of her daughter's children every day. Bernard Quirot and Olivier Vichard have designed a contemporary mix between traditional ways of building houses (raw stone, wood for structure and ornemantation) and modern style (raw concrete, large windows, voluminous white spaces).
