Affectionately dubbed the 'urban-barnyard house', the original house was an early 1900s, 2 bedroom Edwardian weatherboard cottage. Our clients came to us looking for more space, to accommodate the demands of their family now and into the future. A bit wary of vast expanses of 'open plan', they expressed a want for a balance of functional family spaces with more intimate zones with flexibility for future needs.

Intent was to create a strong sense of escape to the coastal bushland, for a client looking for spatial reprieve from their small dwelling and a timber dwelling. The challenge was its location in a bushfire prone, suburban sub-division. Simple principles of defence against cold ocean winds and hot westerly sun, maximising north light and tightly planned circulation, led to the idea of an arm of enveloping the private space within, wrapping itself around as protection against the prevailing conditions.

Skinny houses have a wider appeal than their footprint would suggest. With cities becoming denser, and land becoming rare and expensive, architects are increasingly challenged to design in urban infill spaces previously overlooked. Although designing within these unusual parameters can be difficult, they often require an individual, sensitive response, which can often lead to innovative, playful, even inspiring results. With that in mind, here are 22 houses with a narrow footprint, and a broad impact.

Because of the layout of the original house only one garage space was available. To overcome this, a mechanical turn table was installed that allows 2 vehicles to enter the garage and then be rotated.

Access was a challenge from the start. The site is magnificent but very steep in places. A beautiful creek is crossed at the bottom of a steep descent before the track meanders off through the bush & then up to reach the house site. A new 400metre track was required to get there. Some clearing was required to build, but much importance was placed on minimizing the disturbance to the site & its surrounds. The house is itself is designed on a grid system of steel portal frames orientated to the north.
