The Municipality of Hoogezand-Sappemeer has been given a single, prominent, public building in which a theatre, an arts centre, a library and the town hall are accommodated. In the dynamic heart of this Dutch municipality citizens are served a wide palette of services, information, education, culture and recreation. Existing elements, such as the theatre auditorium, dating back to the 1980s, are re-used in the new development. The adjacent town hall, at the moment still in an outdated state, will ultimately undergo a complete transformation. In the meantime the existing premises and the new build function as a single entity. The connecting, central street forms a temporary solution to the gaps in the present infrastructure. Both in terms of use, as well as technological exploitation and urban design, the new central building has great advantages for Hoogezand-Sappemeer.

Due to the extended periods that the family stays there, the island’s maximum domestic footprint of 110m2 was insufficient. The majority of the building’s functions have been programmed into the underground floor, thus achieving the desired spatial quality and size, while maintaining the structure’s affinity with its surroundings.

In Villa Rotonda, completed July 2010, the archetypical “house with saddle roof” has been abstracted to its vernacular essentials. The design of this house in Goirle is a collaboration of architects Pieter and Thomas Bedaux of Bedaux De Brouwer Architects. In the design they quietly continue the legacy of their grandfather Jos. Bedaux who started the firm in 1937. Yet, the building also showcases the minimalist modernist twist which they are better known for these days.

The impression of The Swan leaning or tilting is exaggerated by its tapering form. In contrast to its adjacent neighbour the Swan’s facade is completely transparent executed in steel and glass. It is the architectural answer to an urban planning request by the municipality of The Hague which asked for a second portal over the Utrechtse baan, in the form of a ‘leaning’ office building of steel and glass. The first portal is formed by the office complex Haagse Poort (Kraaijvanger Urbis, Rob Ligtvoet).
