As everywhere else, demand for childcare and, beyond that, advice and support for families is growing in Nenzing. Close to the town centre, the market town has now combined these two functions in one building: the 'Allesamt' family centre with childcare, a nursery, and a spacious advice area for parents and families. Anyone travelling by train in Walgau will certainly have seen the new building as they pass by. The striking wooden building designed by Christian Schmoelz Architekt is located just before or shortly after Nenzing railway station, directly on the railway line.

After inspection of the 60`s container home, it was clear that an extension or repurposing of the building was economically not viable. We made the decision to reuse the existing foundations and their dimensions for a new building that could house the client's whole family. Our goal was to keep proportions, form, and orientation in line with the surrounding buildings and still achieve a modern confident building that represents the regional construction methods. With that, the decision for a solid wood construction was clear, as it offered not only structural and thermic advantages but made for a very authentic and warm surface on the inside. Wall and ceiling elements were prefabricated with the necessary openings for installation, which required precise planning on our part.

With this in mind, we and the client pursued the goal of bringing this scenery into the house and making it a tangible experience. A 36-meter-long glazed beam with an external graphite-grey steel structure floats 12 meters above the massive base, cantilevering freely. On the street side, the garage with storage and technical rooms is pushed into the slope.

Simplistic Luxury
Natural, authentic and trend-oriented. When a sports hotel is reduced to the bare essentials, a feeling of freedom towards life as well as an unconventional architectural concept is created. The long, narrow building perches on the edge of steep terrain with the sweeping mountain forest in the background. The two lightly angled elements of the building follow the shoreline of the Heidsee. The front of the structure with a lobby, bar, and restaurant faces the entrance to the Rothorn cable car invitingly and forms the communal center of the hotel. An additional four floors with a total of 96 rooms are supported above this massive ground-floor foundation where the generously scaled winter sports room and bicycle room are located.
