As the year culminates, it's once again time for the ArchDaily team of curators to reflect on the best-performing projects of 2025 and consider what readers were most interested in. Through this diverse overview, we assess the cross-continental similarities and differences in trends and construction development. This year brought us many grand cultural and public spaces by Lina Ghotmeh, BIG, Zaha Hadid Architects, DnA, and Serie Architects, who populated events like Expo Osaka and the Venice Biennale, as well as a surprising number of museums and public or landscape works in China and the rest of the Asian continent. However, while these were sought-after projects, the leading works remained, unsurprisingly, residential projects.

In the last two years we have witnessed a radical change and a special interest in this subject because the pandemic forced us to pay specific attention to the configuration of the places we inhabit. This brought about much more holistic designs that seek to address the wellbeing of the user, combining colours, sensory experiences, technology and natural elements that promote health.

Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo, one of Colima’s most beloved and internationally renowned artists, lived for most of his life in the hacienda that anchors the small village of Nogueras. The hacienda, originally established for sugar production in the early 1700s, was acquired by his family in the 1940s and remains a beautiful landmark of the community to this day. Espacio Kaab, which looks out over a corner of the hacienda, honors this venue and its craftsmanship, as well as that of the artist who occupied it. The design of Espacio Kaab exists in dialogue with the hacienda, directing views towards the property as a poetic gesture to honor its location, along with more concrete reflections of its influence, including the use of rescue techniques and materials that were originally used in the hacienda complex. As one enters the property, the natural environment immediately enchants the visitor, creating moments of quiet wonder; it is marked by dry, arid vegetation, cacti, stones, and earth that makes one feel as if in a bubble that both embraces and contrasts with the rest of the region’s colorful floral exuberance. Within and surrounding the property are primavera trees, parotas, tamarind trees, and a magnificent view of the La Barragana river that all serve to welcome you into the characteristic sub-tropical climate of the region.

La Mandarina is a residential and vacation project for a young family. We worked very closely with their ideas and develop a formal scheme that allows visitors to appreciate the forest from any interior space of the house and towards the magnificent wooded site. The conceptual idea revolves around a geometry composed of three volumes connected with corridors and bridges, and move naturally on the ground. The goal was to achieve a cinematic experience full of movements and surprise moments, where the volumes always frame spectacular visuals towards the forest.

Casa Mao set the standard to achieve a perfect balance of contrasts. As you walk through the house, you experience a discreet and subjective dialogue in the middle of elements that oppose and at the same time generate an impeccable compound between them. The characteristics of an open corner lot led the emplacement of the house to be partially closed to the outside granting the users with privacy and protecting the construction from its orientation to the sun. This initiative allowed the project to open itself to the interior and the heart of the house, where the main views are directed to the rich jungle vegetation that surrounds the context. Parotas, palms, and the chosen materiality incite the sensation of freshness within a warm sub-humid climate such as the one in the city, Colima.

The client, a family of three, a mother and two adult children, who were looking for a house that offered both coexistence and independence. The property is located in the municipality of Zapopan, Jalisco, in an upper-class neighborhood with lots of 500 m² (14 m x 35 m approx.) In a context of single-family houses attached on the sides one after another. The architectural conception of the project starts from thinking about the void before what is built. To build with air. This is the origin of the great road that runs longitudinally through the lot, separating the house from the neighboring construction, and making the project more like a corner house and not between party walls.

In a property located in one of the many hills of the city of Tijuana, originally planned for single-family housing, a three-unit horizontal condominium complex was proposed with the intention of increasing the density of the area and giving young people the possibility of acquiring a home in this central neighbourhood. After clarifying the feasibility of re-densifying the lot, and maintaining a low sale cost, the biggest challenge was to achieve natural lighting and cross ventilation in each apartment, since each of them would be only 5 meters wide, but 18 meters deep. To achieve this, the project was resolved mainly in section, playing with changes in heights, which allow openings at different levels, which ventilate and illuminate the houses on an East-West axis.
