“I believe that one cannot achieve a clear expression of our time but is capable of using clear constructive discipline. I am convinced that architecture cannot be anything other than the expression of civilization. The expression of the essence of that civilization. I usually compare architecture with language. To truly master a language, one must master its grammar. Then one could express oneself clearly. One could say very normal things in a language, one can state very logical things, and if one is a poet, one can even express artistic things in a language. And I believe that exactly the same thing happens in architecture.” Excerpt from the documentary MIES.

On the lateral space of the second middle volume, a garden takes center stage throughout the three floors of the house, showering the spaces with natural light. A perforated brick wall creates a show of lights and shadows on the boundary on the side. The connecting bridges on the top floor, same as the one that goes through the interior garden in the access, create a circulation meant for enjoying the greenery and natural light captured in the interior spaces.

But this of course is not the only challenge: the ever-changing and multiplying nature of cities has given rise to atypical lots--properties that have been created by subdividing large swathes of urban land. In general, the reduced dimensions force developers to look for ways to maximize the limited space available to them.

This small project is located in a residential neighbourhood in Asunción of low density and relative tranquillity, where the owner commissioned us to renovate an old house of almost vernacular characteristics and in quite deteriorated conditions, for profitable purposes. Therefore, our efforts were focused on developing a discreet project that would find a way to recycle the house, allowing it some flexibility in the spaces while fitting into a somewhat tight budget. The initial situation presented us with an unfunctional fragmented typology of clogged and annexed spaces, a lack of ventilation and natural lighting, walls without foundations and with noticeable humidity, considerable structural fissures and other anecdotal surprises, such as the presence of a cesspit in one of the rooms.

The neighbourhoods of the Asinción of yesteryear, traditional and almost timeless, are being reached by the impulse of real estate development that day after day seeks to provide options to the growing urban population. Many times it happens that the hurried venture condemns architecture to a second -or third-level of importance, giving priority to "practicality" and prejudices of insecurity that are very common in the country, which does not serve the imaginary of today's society well. We wanted this not to be the case. The situation presented a house of approximately 40 years of age and in quite deteriorated conditions that was to be reincorporated to the supply of real estate. It was already in the process of demolition, with no architectural project to follow. The urgency of time led us to make a quick diagnosis of the situation and to act with the same inertia, while developing a parallel idea that could mean - at least something - for the city.
