Villa de VOID / Atelier ITCH

Villa de VOID was tucked between surrounding buildings, only coming into view after navigating through a narrow alley. The house we encountered was composed of two separate units: a semi-basement and a 1st floor, each with its own entrance. The semi-basement, with a ceiling height barely exceeding 2 meters, felt more like a storage space, and it was essential to find an effective way to connect it with the 1st floor. Given its location tightly enclosed by neighboring buildings, another key concern was how to bring ventilation and natural airflow into the interior. The couple who would live here both worked from home, and their newly adult son also spent much of his time at home. As the entire family spent extended hours indoors, we began the design process by addressing the shortcomings of the existing structure, envisioning a more open and connected home that would foster interaction and communication among family members.

STAY MORE Flagship Store / STAY Architects

The Staymore flagship store is located on a site with a view of the pedestrian park along the Suwoncheon River and the subway passing by beyond it. The 300-pyeong site, located at the corner of three roads, was an irregular trapezoidal shape. Reflecting the brand's characteristics of offering a comfortable bedroom lifestyle, the building was designed to be as low and wide as possible, and the building was naturally derived as a polygonal mass following the maximum building-to-land ratio. As a result, the building blends in well with the low-development rate surrounding landscape and the Suwoncheon pedestrian park, and the observer experiences different faces of the building depending on the point of view from which they stand.

Sihaon Cafe and House Wedding / SPACE CHA

Sihaon, located in Cheonjeon-ri, Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan, was planned as a complex cultural space where House Wedding and Cafe businesses could operate together in April 2021. It was completed over approximately three years by May 2024. The building consists of Sihaon House and Sihaon Cafe on the first floor for wedding ceremonies and cafe operations, Sihaon Avil on the second floor serving as a bride waiting room and a venue for small family events, and Sihaon Garden on the underground first floor with a spacious lawn for outdoor weddings.

A rural house built in 1965 on Jeju Island. The owner, who has long worked with craft using waste materials collected from the sea, proposed not to demolish the old house but to reuse it. The project began by accepting this idea — to regard the old house as a resource for creating new space.

Dreaming of a family vacation home on land that had been left untouched for a long time. For the elderly couple, clients, Daegu was both their hometown and a place they had long called home. Although they now reside in a different region, they still travel to Daegu frequently and want to create a place to stay on the land they had left unused for many years. Their children's families were in a similar situation, so they hoped that this house would become a family vacation home with a yard where any family member could come and stay comfortably when visiting Daegu.

When we received the painting named ‘ Mureungdowon’ which means ‘ Paradise’ in East Asia, we realized anew the value of art. Individuals with a keen eye for detail lead a more diverse and opulent life compared to those who do not share their sensitivity. Observing the ever-changing hues of the sky during the daily commute, discerning alterations along the well-trodden pathways, interpreting the nuances in human interactions - the life of a detail-oriented person is marked by intricacy, their senses finely attuned. Being attentive to details translates into savoring experiences with precision and abundance. For instance, the hexagonal design of a pencil prevents it from rolling off the desk, while dotted lines on an envelope facilitate neat and efficient opening. Such small, pragmatic considerations can be profoundly moving when noticed.

‘Shinheung-market’ is a place that was a symbol of reckless development in the past in ‘Haebangchon’, an old shabby neighbourhood in Seoul. We thought about how to build a space for a young coffee brand here and decided to apply new finishes while maintaining the original appearance rather than inserting a new structure and form into the space. The project started with the goal of telling a new story while respecting local and environmental contexts.

'Yoga is the practice of calming the constant wave of the mind.' The verse is found in Chapter 1:2 of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, a book containing yoga teachings. While practicing yoga, we close our eyes and breathe deeply and slowly in and out in repetition. This is a simple, silent practice of concentrating on one's inner movements. The inner power of reaching complete unity with the universe lies behind the body's movement to perform yoga. The ability to listen to my inner voice through breathing and moving, the ability to come to terms with who I truly am through a complete understanding of myself, and the ability to accept myself as I am, are all fundamental aspects of yoga.

The space that focuses solely on me is the complex city center: Yang Yoo Dang. Yang Yoo Dang, a small hanok located in the alleyway of Bukchon Hanok Village between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, has been a house where a family has lived for a long time. The client hoped that this place, close to the tourist destination, would be used as an open space for anyone and a space for various activities, not a closed residential space. When The family moved into the hanok for the first time, they went through a major renovation it was a house with long memories of my family, so they considered being reborn as a complex cultural space without damaging the atmosphere of the existing hanok.

ZIGBANG, which proposes solutions for the future of the real estate and space, removed its headquarters from the pandemic and built a metaverse called SOMA, an online business method. ZIGBANG, which has been operating this online work method, planned SOMA LOUNGE in response to the need for an offline space that can enhance communication and fellowship among employees and a sense of belonging to the company. We planned this place to embrace both public meetings (Meetings) and private meetings (Parties), where you can chat or have a party together as well as work or meetings.

Nevertheless, we encourage customers to enjoy the analog time, away from digital for a while, for complete ‘resting’ and ‘relaxing’ in nature.

The Perfume Club is a membership club where you can meet new people and make new social relationships through perfumes run by Soohyang. The building used to be an old perfume factory in Soohyang. In the cultural and commercial context of Seongsu-dong, we tried to use the characteristics of a factory building effectively such as high ceilings, gable roofs, and column-free space.

The rich Choi’s house in Gyeongju, the symbol of noblesse oblige, was newly launched as a foundation named the ‘House of Choi’. As part of this project, the only western-style building located at the entrance of Gyeongju Gyo-dong Hanok Village was remodeled into a café. While respecting the historical and cultural context of the region, we wanted this project to be a symbol that connects the past and the future.

The identity of Wynyard was not clear because of various things — a Korean owner-chef who learned cooking in Switzerland and Australia, French modern dining expressing various genres freely, an old building in a quiet back alley of Yeonhui-dong, a town with a strong cultural and artistic background — were mixed and coexist. We, however, thought it could be attractive as itself, and designed the space and brand with the concept of 'ambiguity'.

Sawyer Jeong, located in Hwango-dong, Gyeongju-si, is located between Gyeongju's representative historical sites and Hwangridan-gil, the most developed commercial district. Unlike a traditional hanok, it is a project that remodeled an old, improved hanok, which was the living environment of the general public, into a private stay, and was inspired by the quiet Hwango-dong.
