Glasblokkene at Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen is an ambitious vision for a comprehensive pediatric and women’s hospital, where all expertise related to children, youth, and women converges in a singular facility. The holistic patient view, encompassing both physical and mental challenges, following the patient in a life-course perspective until adulthood, innovates how to offer healthcare services to children. Comprising eight building blocks, Glasblokkene was completed in two phases; the second phase was unveiled in December 2023. It is one of the world's first fully digital and hence resource efficient hospital construction projects. Focus on energy efficiency and sustainability right from the beginning has resulted in numerous green solutions and the best energy label in the market.

Stairs are often an inevitable part of a building's DNA. Nowadays, staircases not only serve the function of practicality but are also a showcase of their own kind, especially if paired with a color that is guaranteed to grab attention. Among warm colors, red is considered to be the most powerful one. On one hand, it evokes feelings of joy and energy, and on the other, feelings of alertness and danger. Red can stimulate a whole range of emotions. Therefore, its usage should be attentive, delicate, and thought out.

The site is located in Nydalen in the northern part of Oslo, a former industrial area which over the last years have been transformed into housing, offices and educational areas with the river Akerselva – a main recreational area in Oslo- flowing through the neighborhood. The project is part of a transformation plan for Spikerverket (a former nail factory) by MAD arkitekter - developed by Avantor. The master plan prepares for offices rising towards the urban side in the east, and housing towards the green low-rise areas in the west. The office buildings are designed by MAD arkitekter http://www.archdaily.com/354733/spikerverket-mad-arkitekter/, whereas April Arkitekter have designed the housing; the first step (buildings F + G) containing 40 apartments, all with access from a new square towards Nydal Street. Buildings F+G is the first two out of a total of five apartment buildings at Spikerverket.

Nothing spurs creativity as tight restrictions. And you don’t get them much tighter than an 11 meter wide footprint for a 15 story housing block. Add two towering, 16 story-buildings as next-door neighbors, and it is obvious that something extraordinary had to be invented in order to make this work.
