Casa Linder is a 3,700 square foot single-family residence located in a well-established, but transitional East Dallas neighborhood. Informed by the owner’s fondness for reclaimed materials, and inspired by the historic architecture of the Texas Blackland Prairie homestead vernacular, Casa Linder embraces the architectural heritage of the earliest Dallas settlers by blending the simple forms and materials of the original prairie dwellings with contemporary planning and crisp detailing.

The Abbey Church uses native Texas limestone to reflect on the 1000-year old Cistercian Order founded in 1096 during the Romanesque period. The austere and harmonious Romanesque Order was an appropriate architectural inspiration with its quiet and restrained nature reflecting the aura of the monks’ life. The humble and human characteristics of this period of Architectural history are also clearly appropriate for the present day philosophy of the Abbey.

As an intense collaboration between architect, client, and landscape architect, a great amount of thought was incorporated into every detail throughout the entire design and construction process. This fluid process was necessary in order to successfully deliver a functional house, equally capable of hosting informal family gatherings and large social functions. As an urban retreat for an artist and car enthusiast who reside next door, much care was taken to quietly insert this new house into the neighborhood, yet express the unique identities of the owners. As such, the client’s affinity for the color blue was incorporated into several of the dominating elements within the garden and the house.
