Within a consolidated urban context, the building occupies two opposing plots that border distinct marginal planes. By taking advantage of the significant difference in elevation between these planes, part of the building is elevated, creating a qualified void beneath it. This space allows for visual and physical continuity—an urban permeability that enables a clear understanding of the built fabric within this section of the city. Consequently, the design invites the possibility of crossing the block, offering an expanded perception of urban space—now fluid, and deliberately mediating between the human and urban scales—thus contributing to a logical comprehension of the city.

Located on a 980 m² plot in the city of Braga, this single-family residence emerges from a direct relationship with the site and its orientation. The plot opens to the east and south, where the views and optimal solar exposure unfold, while the western side is more constrained, defined by the presence of a roughly 5-meter-high party wall resulting from adjacent constructions. The proposal therefore seeks to shield itself to the west and open generously toward the east and south, ensuring thermal comfort, privacy, and high spatial quality.

Built upon a pre-existing structure, the "Casinha da Melroeira," located in Ourém, follows the same volumetric language as the "Casa da Melroeira," situated on the adjacent plot. The two houses are connected by their pentagonal form; however, their scale and relationship with the context differ, resulting from their interaction with the immediate surroundings.

The IMLA House is located in Porto in Bairro da Vilarinha, a neighbourhood built during the last stage of economic housing neighbourhoods developed by the regime of Estado Novo in 1958. The neighbourhood is mainly composed by small dimensions semi-attached houses and since the IMLA house is the last house of the street, right in the corner between two streets, it has a bigger garden.

The renovation project of the headquarters building, built in 2001, was recently completed as part of a series of interventions carried out at PRF - Gas Solutions' facilities. The work focused mainly on the ground floor, where the reception area was enlarged and visually extended into a new auditorium space. Work and meeting rooms were created, which receive natural light through one of the façades and through the auditorium, which acts as a visual extension of all the rooms on this floor. The façades underwent the necessary changes to create the auditorium's relationship with the outside, also optimizing the openings on the upper floor to achieve a more generous entry of natural light and relating the expression of the building extended in 2018, unifying the whole. A more fluid spatial solution was thus achieved, qualifying the reception area, and creating an auditorium that effectively participates in the adjoining spaces.

The property under consideration, a historically significant building in Póvoa de Varzim, not only carried the weight of its classification restrictions but also held a special place in the hearts of local residents, serving as a collective memory of the city. Our research unveiled a fascinating backstory - the previous owner was a well-traveled individual who poured their worldly experiences into the conceptualization of this edifice, resulting in a uniquely eclectic and neo-Renaissance architectural masterpiece. We like to describe this as a form of "reactive" architecture. This architectural endeavor aimed to create a subtle interplay between preservation and innovation, not as a critique of the pre-existing structure but as a celebration of the two distinct eras of the building's construction.
