K's Veranda, the latest chapter in the story of K's Charcoal in Ahmedabad, embodies the spirit of Hiren Patel Architects + Design (HPAD) — crafting spaces that breathe, balance, and belong. What once was a lively, open lawn beside the restaurant has blossomed into a soulful retreat. Here, walls seem to melt into the landscape, and the indoors drift effortlessly into the open air. It doesn't read as an addition, but as a graceful evolution, carrying the familiar warmth and comfort of its predecessor, yet whispering in its own quiet voice.

Situated within a verdant campus that houses Asia's largest biogas plant, the project was approached with the intent to redefine conventional office architecture. The client, already committed to sustainability, was keen on a design that resonated with the ecological ethos of the site while fostering a dynamic workspace. Rather than adhering to a rigid, rectilinear layout, we embraced a fluid, curvilinear form—one that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding landscape, creating an urban oasis within the larger campus.

Tribhuvana: “The Art of Building Responsibly” - Crafting futures utilizing new vernacular architecture that weaves tradition and innovation. "Architecture of Happiness" by Alain de Botton (2006) delves into the deep connection between architecture and human well-being. De Botton posits that our physical surroundings profoundly impact our emotions and happiness. He argues that our architectural choices are guided by our personal stories and inner states, seeking to harmonize our environment with our inner selves. This book aligns beautifully with this studio’s philosophy, emphasizing the importance of architectural harmony with environment, culture, and history. It seeks to create structures that seamlessly blend with their surroundings, promoting contentment for users and creators alike. This philosophy underscores the profound influence of architecture on emotions, translating "Architecture of Happiness" ideals into tangible, thoughtful design.

Maativan signifies a natural building sanctuary made of mud amidst the forest’s embrace. The natural farmhouse nestled on the fringes of Wada’s reserved forest area near Mumbai in India stands as a testament to dedication to environmental consciousness through the integration of material palette, biophilic design, passive design climatology principles, and construction technology. Maativan exhibits the integration of nature within the building envelope in the thoughtful planning of spaces around existing trees, preserving existing natural vegetation. The design follows biophilic architecture design principles. Shapes were influenced by organic forms found in nature and the ephemeral quality of natural light. The intention was to create an immersive, atmospheric experience that inspires a feeling of being in a forest in a lush outdoor space under an overgrown natural canopy. Organic forms merging with surroundings take clues from the works and philosophy of architects Nari Gandhi and Javier Senosiain.

If we were to talk about a desirable, communal living space – one that is ingrained and thus, an integral part of our culture and growing up; where do we start? Perhaps, we start with the stories that we have heard, the images and the thoughts we have from then – thoughts that built over time into inseparable, interconnected and congruous narratives and many more stories. This way of life stimulated our senses and we experienced and explored expression – which resonated beyond just the visual sight or aesthetics. It appealed to us at many levels.

The Ring House is located in Jaspur, the northern suburb of Ahmedabad. While a water canal passes through the site’s southern edge, agricultural fields surround the rest of the sides. With water and green fields all around and more than 120 trees, predominantly Mango and Chickoo (Sapodilla) trees, the site is an abode for a variety of birds, an important element of the biodiversity of the context. The proposed project is a weekend home for a large-sized family comprising 14 members, including four kids under ten years old. As the site is amid natural features, we intended to insert the built form carefully without tempering the existing set of features and trees.

Designed with the needs of a business person in mind, this office space harmoniously blends with its natural surroundings. The site boasts numerous small and large foliage trees, with one particular tree on the south side capturing the attention of everyone who enters the area. Taking inspiration from this majestic tree, a Vastu-compliant plan was devised beneath its shade. Rather than imposing itself on the environment, the office was designed to respect and integrate seamlessly with its context. The driveway and building were thoughtfully constructed around the existing trees on the property.

Brick and concrete are exposed on the elevation to emphasize the character of the house. To allow penetration of natural light and fresh air, a clean composition of internal volumes and voids was designed which also enables the spaces to flow into each other while merging with the outdoors. The house is in a north-facing site and is essentially a two-story structure with courtyards and light wells. The route from the foyer directly leads to the passage which flows to the kitchen, dining, and family living spaces with the formal living space to the left and glazing on the side walls to give a glimpse of the open-to-sky green courtyard to the right.

In the corner of a large farmland located in close proximity to the Thol bird sanctuary in Gujarat, Cool Shed was initially supposed to be a security cabin with a store room. The project name is therefore a wordplay on the familiar building typology of a tool shed, wherein a simple structure is built to store machines and equipment for farming and automobile repairing. Cool Shed was then rethought as service quarters before finally being designed and built as an outhouse for weekend getaways.

Amidst the scrubland setting of Kanjari Village, which is very close to the wetlands of Thol & Nalsarovar, lies this site which just had a lonesome Piludi(Salvadora persica) tree. The brief received was to make a residence with a gigantic living area to host large gatherings and a couple of bedrooms to reside within the precincts of these wetlands. It’s a single-floor residence enveloped in glass and exposed concrete to devise a monolithic composition. The complete house is shaded by an inverted slab cantilevered about 12 feet from the inner facade, supported by a mild steel colonnade for maximum visibility. This 12 feet projection defines the residence and that’s how the name of this house came up. 12.0 was designed on the principle of providing maximum prospects and even the open planning was done to support maximum visibility of the landscape from all the interior spaces.

An abode to humans and birds alike; Kalrav house, which translates to the house of chirping birds, is nested within a thicket of previously existing and newly sapped trees. Facing the east, Kalrav (façade) opens up in the form of a ‘flying bird’. Following the position of the house, the intent is the least possible footprint taken up by the house. The form is shaped with glass as a façade supported by exposed concrete and lime plaster to flaunt the minimal, sleek, and earthy design. One is welcomed by the low heightened entrance pavilion into the house which unfolds two elevated seating rooms – private and formal- encompassed by water bodies, thus forming the ambiance of a floating island.
