Landscape architecture is having a moment. The latest proof: last week, the US Department of Homeland Security decided to accredit the field with its prestigious STEM designation. As part of the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educational disciplines that fall under this category, landscape architecture students can now spend an additional 24 months seeking employment and training post-graduation in the United States after an initial period of a year granted to all graduates. The title also promises more prestige, higher entry salaries, and additional career flexibility. Torey Carter-Conneen, CEO of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), calls the development a significant advancement for 'landscape architecture education and practice, and that is great for America and the global community.'

History: After a devastating fire destroyed most of Memorial Elementary School’s original building, DIGroupArchitecture was commissioned to design a brand new facility for 650 students in grades Pre-K through 5. Collaboration with the district and consideration for the school’s history were paramount, resulting in a state-of-the-art learning facility and a welcoming public event space for the community. The success of this project is a result of two major factors: a 20-year relationship with the client and the maturing of DIGroupArchitecture’s in-house graphics and interiors departments. The Drexel campus straddles both sides of Market Street in Philadelphia’s University City section. Sasaki's addition to the Daskalasis Athletic Center (DAC), a 1960s-era athletic complex, accomplishes several institutional and programmatic goals. It increases the university’s visual presence along Market Street, integrates existing and new buildings into a unified complex, and groups all of the recreation facilities into a new building wing. Respecting that the DAC is surrounded by one of Drexel’s few outdoor landscape spaces, the design also maximizes preservation of the site’s open space.

Metcalfe Architecture & Design recently completed the renovation of the Seidenberg House in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania, USA. This previously restored mid-century modern kit house (fig. 1) takes full advantage of its pristine location in the lush woodlands of Southeastern Pennsylvania (fig. 2). We pushed the upper level of this structure into the treetops, transforming it into a house in the sky, with an expanded second-floor living space and entry (fig. 3), and renovated kitchen, living areas and bathrooms.

The Kensington Creative and Performing Arts High School is the first LEED Platinum public high school in the United States. This new public high school for the School District of Philadelphia transformed a brownfield into a green school. The project teaches about living sustainably to students, teachers, staff and community. Perhaps the biggest lesson is that even deteriorated urban landscapes can be revitalized to become sources of hope for the future. While Kensington is one of the most down-trodden and dangerous areas in the City, there is movement to establish a sustainable community there. This new school is viewed by many as the symbol of that long term goal.

The most recent addition to the iconic buildings of Independence Mall in Philadelphia is one dedicated to illustrating the American Jewish experience. The National Museum of American Jewish History (NMAJH) designed by Ennead Architects opened in November 2010. Adjacent to Independence Mall, the museum overlooks such attractions as Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and the National Constitution Center. Built at a cost of $150 million by Philadelphia construction management firm Intech Construction, the five-story, 100,000-square-foot space includes 25,000 square feet of exhibit space, an 85-foot-tall atrium and a 200-seat theater. The terra cotta and glass building is topped out with a beacon of light meant to symbolize themes of faith and patriotism.
