Urban-Planning Situation - At the beginning of the 20th century, Berlin's Osthafen (East Harbour) was one of the largest industrial harbours in the city. Intended for transportation and storage of goods, a three-storey administration building with a canteen and storage buildings, and warehouses shaped the Spree embankment along Stralauer Allee between Oberbaumbrücke (Oberbaum Bridge) and Treptower Park. Today, the picture is completed by modern office and residential buildings. Media, fashion, and creative firms have discovered this exclusive area around the 'MediaSpree' for themselves. In the early 2000s, TCHOBAN VOSS Architekten set out a master plan for new construction and further development of the Osthafen area, incorporating the historical buildings.

With the completion of the new headquarters of SachsenEnergie AG, an important element of Dresden’s skyline has been created. The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have designed a building complex with one thirteen-story and one eight-story tower, with a height of 51 and 32 meters respectively, which is in keeping with the urban context around the main railway station. Located to the south of the inner city, the new development is a visible landmark that fits in with the city of Dresden’s new town planning guide for high-rise buildings. The project, under the general planning of gmp, was planned, using the Building Information Modeling (BIM) method in all trades.

One of the main issues when approaching metal façades is the risk of corrosion, which can create points of weakness in the material and interfere with the aesthetics of the building. The complex design brief for a limited architecture competition included incorporating one of the oldest buildings in Berlin-Kreuzberg, a listed apartment house in a dilapidated state, as well as the challenge of designing a new residential building for the location. The listed structure was restored adhering to building conservation guidelines and an attractive new residential building was constructed as an elongated U-shaped complex directly adjoining the listed house. As a result, the buildings together form a quiet, private courtyard that has been enhanced by landscaped community areas.

The story of the existing houses is quickly told: It concerns the listed Appendix Old Klöpperhaus, which was built in 1911 as an extension of the Old Klöpperhaus according to the plans of the architects Lundt and Kallmorgen. The Old Klöpperhaus itself, a grand office building, was able to grow into a modern business and office building in 2016 thanks to the renovation by caspar.

The Poly Greenland Plaza office complex, built to a design by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp), has been selected for the Award of Excellence of the 2020 CTBUH Awards in the Urban Habitat–District/Master Plan category, which qualifies it as a finalist in the Overall Category. The ensemble of office towers and commercial buildings forms a unique address in the city environment. A generous sequence of plazas and an open shopping arcade create diverse urban qualities that link the complex with its surroundings.

The new Zalando Headquarters consists of an ensemble of two buildings that form the heart of the company’s new campus in Berlin- Friedrichshain, neighboring the “Mercedes-Benz-Arena” and the East Side Gallery. The design of the seven-story building, accommodating a total of 43,000 m² of office space. Rather than forming a closed block, it assumes an open and transparent presence in the city, creating a striking expression and matching the company’s identity. The wrap-around glass façade which embraces the carved architectural volume like brackets is a fundamental part of the design. It is this reinterpretation of the traditional Berlin block, created by rotating the building layout diagonally to the urban-development plan, that enabled a design solution to be found with which the building unfolds towards the city.
