Between the town hall, the church, and the local theatre – the familiar center of communal life – a new building is emerging that quietly seeks to connect all these places: the Kössen Education Center.

This poetic vision materializes in the landscape as a meandering canopy that follows the terrain, inviting reflection on labor, landscape, and renewal.

Concrete is often seen as the material of modernity, defined by its structural strength, raw finish, and unmistakable gray tone. It became the default palette of 20th-century architecture, a symbol of functionality and permanence. Yet, concrete is not bound to this chromatic identity. Its color is a byproduct of the cement, aggregates, and chemical composition used in its mix, and it can be intentionally altered through pigmentation. Among the many hues explored, red stands out — not only for its visual intensity, but for its ability to root buildings in place, evoke cultural references, and imbue architecture with a material presence that feels both elemental and expressive.

The recovery of this building called tabià (once used as a stable and barn) becomes an opportunity for reinventing, in a contemporary way, a building strongly linked to local agricultural tradition. Inserted in a sloping plot, in the second lane with respect to the roadside and the buildings facing it, the tabià develops into 3 levels: one partially underground with a hybrid structure in stone and concrete; an intermediate one with a structure in wooden pillars and beams, where there is also the main entrance; and an attic projecting cantilevered on all four sides.

The new tavern is located in the old town of Brixen near the main cathedral. The building dates back to the 13th century. Among other uses over the centuries, it has been the official residence of the cathedral’s dean. Several historical rooms now offer contiguous spaces for up to a hundred guests. An inner courtyard and a sunny garden complete the restaurant. The aim of the project was to restore the building’s original character. Rooms and surfaces that had been built in the meantime were removed, so as to preserve or refurbish historically valuable elements. Already existing but blocked openings were also uncovered in order to protect the historical monument.

The Frastanz-Hofen education center was developed as a joint location for childcare, kindergarten, and primary school. It develops from an existing school building, which was comprehensively refurbished but also improved functionally and structurally, with the school still in operation. The extension consists of four new wings that seamlessly connect to the existing building. As a result of the new overall shape of the building, quiet peripheral zones were created for individual learning clusters, while a central marketplace opens up in the center as a place for meeting and exchange. In this space, children of all ages and parents can come together.
