Since 2013, the City of Munich has been operating a nationally unique overnight shelter for homeless men, women, and children, initially housed temporarily in a building of the former Bayern Barracks. With the completion of a new facility in Schwabing-Freimann offering 730 places, both the standards and range of services have been significantly enhanced. Those seeking shelter are no longer accommodated in rooms with eight to twelve people but rather in rooms with four beds. What's more, the facility's purpose has evolved from merely providing overnight accommodation to offering comprehensive support, including dedicated spaces for counseling, medical treatment, and a daytime gathering area.

Besides the task of designing a clinic, finding an idiom that was fitting to this town on the outskirts of Salzburg was the primary challenge here. The result is still a little raffish. With its valley roofs, the building fulfills its responsibility to the neighborhood, with which it just about shares a vocabulary. It still feels warehouseish, slightly vapid from certain angles. Undemonstrative here and there. One of the facades looks like a toy face with a winking eye. On the opposite side, the staircase suggests teeth.

Conceptionally, it distinguishes between private rooms and a generous open space for daily family life. All private rooms are artistically composed of a sculpture of wooden cubes in between which the open space can unfold horizontally and vertically, bringing in light deep into the house - even in winter - as well as drawing views into the garden, the treetops, and across the lake from any vantage point.

Tucked away on Lake Zell is a house to which that royal among the has-beens of buzzwords, depleted of meaning from years of overuse, might genuinely apply. The project’s starting point was formal and postmodern: Louis Kahn’s Trenton Bath House (NJ, 1955). Thus the house’s pyramid hip roof sits on a square base. Thus the distribution of the ground floor. Thus the courtyard takes its cue from the opening in Kahn’s roof.

The continuing demand for new space in Munich is increasing the pressure on existing buildings in particular. The potential for densification, by means of roof extensions and stories, is either already almost exhausted or limited by the authorities. In the search for further densification, the basement floors are increasingly coming into focus. In London, this trend has been evident for decades.

In each of our nostrils, two types of nerves play an essential role in our health. The olfactory and trigeminal nerves capture odors and send information to the brain, more specifically to the olfactory bulb, for interpretation. In turn, this communicates with the cortex, responsible for the conscious perception of odors, but also with the limbic system, which controls mood and unconscious emotions. This is the body's defense against bad smells or irritating or strong odors, creating aversion to those that could harm us in some way.
