Brief. The brief was for a 4-bedroom house on 40 perch land, with all the service areas and related amenities. The question was how to organize the brief through connections, overlaps and separations of spaces to create the right matrix. We were taken on a tour to see the client’s existing house, and to see the little rituals that have been developed over the years that they would want to bring to the new house; it was a great insight and a briefing.

The site purchased by the client was a 14 perch land; bordered by an approach road and a private lane on the two sides. The requirement of the Client was for a four-bedroom house which would give the family privacy and relaxation after each busy day of work. The trees and the greenery were mostly placed towards the rear of the land. Therefore, since the initial visit; and the schematic design, it was apparent that the main spaces should be located towards the rear of the site. Starting off with this approach, the design further developed into creating an envelope of space that would reap the maximum advantage of the available greenery, in and around the site.

The challenge given was to build a small hotel bringing back the sense of being submerged in nature. The site, a 12-perch land enclave within the haphazard neighborhood, hardly bears a single factor to experience the natural settings of Ella other than the cooler breeze, in which the BBQ Hub was born.

This nature friendly abode brings together nature and architecture to celebrate the beauty of its adjoining paddy field.
Despite the challenge of having to design on a narrow site, the house is designed for its tropical context to achieve ideal orientation. The front of the land faces the entrance road while the rear faces the endless serene paddy field. It helps to capture natural ventilation that creates a comfortable and cool atmosphere inside the house.

SLINTEC is one of the most successful implementations of a private-public partnership in aspects of funding, management and operations that lead to a challenging framework that generated a unique architectural solution in design of spatial and functional requirements. The building is a catalyst for scientific research putting Sri Lanka on the map for science and technology with the state of the art facility being the signature trademark for the nanotechnology park that is to proceed in the future masterplan.

A small coconut grove measuring approximately half an acre (80 Perches) overlooking a paddy field, inherited by the owner, was selected to build a house in Sub Urban Colombo. There were existing houses on the Western edge of the property with medium built up density but the Eastern side was full of mature trees including coconut trees, while Northern side overlooked a beautiful paddy field. In addition there were substantial numbers of existing mature trees present at the site boundaries, giving it almost a ‘semi wilderness’. Challenges for the architects were to build a four bedroomed house overlooking this wonderful future garden saving many existing trees as possible.
