More than 70 years have passed, and I still vividly remember that day, every summer, it was hot, our children would gather under the canopy of an old tree and then set up a small tent together. We call it “House” to avoid the sun and to have fun. Some cut down trees, others cut leaves to set up tents and decorate them so that they were beautiful and eye-catching. After completing the "House", we went to find things to "settle down" in that leaf hut...

Sóc’s House was built on an area of 70 m2 in an alley view up to the mountain, located on Phan Chu Trinh street (also known as “Foreigner town”) around 600 m from the beach. The owner’s goal is to have a simple, discreet outside, but modern and fully functional inside space. The house also clearly shows the personality of the owner with a romantic space, filled with green trees and raw, rustic materials.

The plot was located on a slanted road branching from a lower junction. It was surrounded by greenery and laid opposite a small park. The plot itself sloped gently at the back, which caused a level difference of about 1,5 meters. The building was designed for a 3-generation family of four (grandfather, parents and son) and was requested to have the master bedroom placed at its center, which therefore offered an overall view to the common space and the grandfather’s room on the ground floor.

The seasonal and adrift lifestyle of the people in Mekong River delta was partly narrated through the architecture of stilt house, nhà đá, nhà đạp, … These all belonged to a typology characterized by simple structure, which comprised one light roof system covering the temporary framework below. Prior to urbanization, this regional architecture had long been in harmony with its then context, hence resonated with the surroundings.
