Choosing to remain in this coveted pocket of North Fremantle, our clients sought to expand rather than relocate – a challenge made intricate owing to the site's strict heritage controls. The brief called for additional floor space, including a new master bedroom suite and a versatile space to serve as either a study or second living area. Drawing on the client's distinct Mediterranean sensibility, our role was to translate this relaxed approach to contemporary living with the home's existing heritage character.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the aboriginal lands that we work and play, the Wadandi people of the Noongar Nation their elders, past, present, and emerging. We acknowledge that aboriginal sovereignty was never ceded. Many people dream of having a weekend that will one-day ‘morph’ into a permanent home. For this couple, who had been living in Sydney for over a decade before returning to Perth, the idea was to have a semi-permanent home in the country that would complement their cottage in the city. So, when this steep, tree-filled Margaret River bush block – a three-hour drive south of Perth – became available, it was an opportunity too good to refuse.

Situated on a busy street, the Hyde Park House seeks to maximize views of both the leafy Hyde Park across the road and the city skyline, whilst maintaining the privacy of the family. The challenge was to design a home that was not trying to replicate a character home but was contemporary to suit the needs of the family and fit in with its streetscape, not imposing on it given it would be two-story and the neighbors were single story.

95 Evans St is the first multi-residential development to be completed within a recently up-zoned, transit-oriented precinct, to meet Perth’s infill residential targets. As a result, the project bore much responsibility to set a positive precedent for all future development in the predominantly single residential surrounding area. The site is particularly sensitive as it is situated directly at the transition between two zones - the R15 zone to the east (single, detached residential) and the more intensive R100 zone to the west. With such an abrupt transition burdened upon the site, a well-considered response was essential. It was the intent of both the client and design team to rise to this challenge and respond to these unique aspects of the site responsibly and with as much sensitivity as possible.

Parking garages present an aesthetic challenge to even the most creative design minds. Their vast scale and monotonous appearance are necessitated by function, but result in the difficulty of making the garages visually interesting instead of simply overbearing. Cladding a parking garage in a unique material can add visual interest and texture to achieve a more human connection. However, this in turn creates concerns about still bringing light and air into the garage.

The brief. A home for a young family and grandmother (in the future). All areas of the home had to be wheelchair accessible, complying with the gold standard of the 'Liveable Housing Design Guidelines' which calls for wider hallways, doorways, and circulation space generally. This also meant the design needed to address the slope in the site, through ramps and graded paths to enable a person to transverse from front boundary to rear boundary without going up or down a step. (Note: this also makes for an easy move-in day for the furniture movers!)

This Grade-A State heritage listed workers cottage on the corner of George and King Streets, East Fremantle, provided an exciting base to create a modern family home. The concept was to respect and highlight the existing cottage by distancing the bulk of the extension to the ROW, linking the two with an internal courtyard. With a mixed-use zoning, the home is designed with a self-contained office and bedroom which can be leased in future should the owner decide to do so. The highly polished introduced finishes of “Nero Marquina” marble, white oxide concrete flooring and glossed black timber lend a dramatic contrast to the raw and matte finishes of the cottage. An intentional contrast that references the original materials with an opposing finish. The owners intend to use the nearby parks and cafes as extensions of their home, hence gardens are minimal and low maintenance.

It is the result of a very strong collaborative process between client, architect, builder, sub-consultants, sub-contractors, and suppliers. The client is a close friend and a unique paradoxical individual. One part reclusive and one part party queen she wanted the seclusion and ethereal quality of a cave to escape into that satisfied all her needs without having to really go anywhere else, yet also at a moments notice she wanted to be able to invite the world in and entertain close friends and family in style.

This challenging site also has the busy Vincent Street to its north and a 1.5m sewer easement to the rear boundary. Regardless, this prime location is wedged between Hyde Park and bustling Beaufort Street, and just a few kilometers from Perth.
The heritage listed 1904 house had undergone numerous renovations over the years. Our clients, wanted to upgrade the existing house, add in a secondary garage, add a small studio space and upgrade the landscaping with a reasonable but modest budget. We gave them a sketch design that met their brief which they were happy with but in seeing the true potential of the site we went out on a limb and gave them another option demonstrating the full potential of the site and opening their eyes to a new way of living. Not really having greatly thought of the alternates or possibilities, our clients were blow away by the proposal and it snowballed from there. We basically reworked the whole house and reoriented the spaces to accommodate a growing family and a more modern lifestyle that was specifically tailored to our clients. The final budget ended up significantly higher but our clients could see the real value of what we were proposing and were happy to revisit and increase the budget. I truly believe it’s an architects job to go above and beyond to help our clients realise the true value and potential of their site. Often clients are unaware of the possibilities or, might need a little nudge to help them to reconsider any preconceptions they might have. At the end of the day, clients engage us for our opinions and experience but a house should first and foremost be for our clients, not our egos. These were dream clients too, nearly everything we threw at them (within reason) they took on board. They gave us their absolute trust which was somewhat daunting but we had absolute respect for, as did the builder and all the trades on site. Ultimately I believe their trust, backing and passion in all the people behind the project created such an amazing and unique home that we are all so proud to have been involved in.
