Arriving at José Ignacio you will find El Secreto, a strip of irregular land formed by the proximity to the dunes and the sea. Preserving these wild surroundings was the main objective while projecting, thus the house is raised to save the sea views and make the least possible impact to preserve the natural existing condition.

The requirements for the project were very ambitious. The clients wanted a house with a tight surface area of no more than 350 sqm, but they wanted a wide variety of spaces, all of which should be spacious and generously sized. Finally, we agreed on the architectural program: a master suite with a dressing room, three bedrooms en suite for the children, a living room, dining room, kitchen, quincho, playroom, laundry room, storage room, and a maid’s room.

The Faena Art Center is the building that closes the complex. Embraced by the Molino Sur and by the previously mentioned “L” shaped building, with a façade on Azucena Villaflor and Aime Paine streets, it is the remodeling and expansion of the sector where the complex's engine room was originally housed. It is basically a two-story building, the ground floor and a triple-height first floor, which is transformed into a large “T”-shaped space for multiple uses. The sector is completed with complementary services, which are housed in an underground sector, on the terrace, and in a new building that is added on the corner.

This house was designed for a couple who has lived in different countries and chose La Barra to build their shelter in the world, a place where they could go from leisure to musical recordings, which is why the house was designed with a special room with all the needs of a professional recording room. The house, developed in two volumes that articulate a large garden/patio with a pool, consists of different spaces: four comfortable bedrooms, a playroom, a writing-room to think music with a view of the sea through the forest and a large living room with an incorporated kitchen.

The project strategy consisted on breaking down the total volume of the house, in a way that none of the façades would express the total height of the building, to avoid showing a robust object. The proportions of a two-story building inside a short plot could cause the perception of a bulky and heavy volume. We could achieve this fragmentation through the distribution of the mass, alternating the filled spaces (covered) and void spaces (semi-covered). This avoids a compact look from the outside and instead creates an effect of permeability.
