The dramatic improvement in recent decades in our understanding of sustainable design has shown that designing sustainably doesn't have to be a compromise—it can instead be a benefit. When done correctly, sustainable design results in higher-performing, healthier buildings which contribute to their inhabitants' physical and mental well-being.

The eco-district of Le Vialenc marks the change in the urban-planning policy of the town of Aurillac. The new approach implies viewing the town and housing of tomorrow differently and aiming to increase responsibility and sustainability. The proposed building is a symbol in itself of the town’s renewal in an eco-responsible neighbourhood. Its position is strategic, its image emblematic. Its shape is simple and contemporary: two intertwined volumes referring to complementary forces,- verticality and horizontality.

Placing a building in the centre of a small town asserts our desire to heighten urban density and to take part in livening it up and improving its appeal, instead of choosing a plot on the outskirts. The project itself is an alternative to spreading urbanization. The building fits into a hollow between two existing buildings. It is composed of a mixed program of offices (for architecture) and private flats (one 6-room and two 3-room flats). The L-shaped construction surrounds an open courtyard on the back street and vertical circulation gives access to its half-levels.

On the site of the CHU d’Estaing teaching hospital, the shape of the new teaching and research unit (UFR) and dental care centre building (CSD) is designed to make the 2 activities and units instantly distinguishable. The architectural project had to overcome a twofold difficulty: it had to give the new project a very clear identity of its own on an altogether different scale next to the CHU d’Estaing, while also offering a unique building asserting the existence of two readily identifiable and distinguishable entities. Two programmes and a building with enough presence to form a consistent frontage. The frontage is always the main feature, even from the rear of the hospital.
