The industrial city, the child of railways and automobiles, has itself given rise to a new urban form: the dense suburb. Predominantly residential, it contains detached, semi-detached, and row houses, sometimes even small, collective clusters of housing along its main roadways and intersections. For the sake of comfort, major roadways avoid cutting through such dense suburbs. Its proximity to a large city allows for other forms of mobility, whether individual (soft) or collective (public). Its density entails a maximal use of public facilities and the presence of neighborhood shops.

The European Union intends to be climate neutral by 2050. This will require decarbonization at all levels of the economy, and the construction sector will have a particularly key role to play. The sector accounts for around 40% of CO2 emissions globally, and steel and concrete, in particular, require enormous amounts of energy to produce. There needs to be a paradigm shift to replace these building materials and their associated environmental impact. Natural and renewable building materials play a crucial role in this.

Perched high up the Butte Bergeyre in the 19th arrondissement, this vertical house dominates Paris. Being able to build a new private home in Paris is a rare opportunity, all the more unique on this very butte, fully integrated within the Parisian cityscape. The challenge was to settle in a family with four children over seven levels, on a minimal adjoining plot only 4.80 m large. Erected on ten 18-meter-deep micropiles, this 204 square-meter house is a manifesto for vertical living in dense spaces.

The project consists of the transformation of 2 buildings into a Tap Room and an entertainment place for the client Gallia Paris. The bar is supplied directly by the production of the brewery, located in the adjacent building. Several objectives guided us during the design of the project: First, the search for contextual architectural simplicity, and the expression of a humble place evoking the idea of a "factory bar".

We wanted Paris’ biggest wooden amenity to be a real public place. Playing with its volumes allows to limit its emergence and to keep it quite narrow, making it almost an inhabited hedge. Only the vertical gesture creating the hall’s « cathedral » hosting the climbing wall reveals its intense activity to the passers-by. This set-up allows a vast internal space, opened towards the Bois de Boulogne and continuous between two public gardens. It asserts itself on the boulevard and takes into account the existing pedestrian paths, welcoming everyone as a public place would.

The new building, named Ode, replaces the cramped, dilapidated offices scattered around various places in the town, representing both a qualitative and quantitative leap. Acting as a music school and a performance theater, the facility is as much a teaching center as a disseminator of the musical and dramatic arts.
