Architecture is increasingly asked to do less, not more. In environments shaped by constant movement, noise, and expectation, spaces that allow people to stay, pause, and be present have become both rarer and more necessary. Many public and semi-public places are designed to keep people moving, consuming, or reacting, leaving little room for lingering, observation, or simply being without a reason.

"Alpendre" originates from Galician/Portuguese, derived from the Latin "appendix" (added or accessory). The Faculty of Architecture of CESUGA conducted a wood design and build workshop during the IV Xornadas Internacionais da Madeira 2024. The main goal was to promote wood as a building material in the forestry region of Galicia, Spain. The workshop focused on intervening in the environment near the University Campus: Feáns, A Coruña. This area, while transforming, maintains a strong identity, vibrant social interaction, and significant environmental and ethnographic value.

The faculty of architecture of CESUGA completed a wood and design workshop (during the III International Conference on Timber 2023), whose main goal was to promote the use of wood as a building material in the forestry region of Galicia, Spain, through education in design and construction techniques. An intervention on the ruins of a water mill became the starting point and main objective of the workshop that took place on Senda do Rio Sisalde (The Sisalde River trail), a wide valley that runs from the Atlantic coast, through agricultural land, productive forests, and the Fraga, a protected native forest rich in biodiversity, all the way to the top of the hills. The ruin, without a roof, was found exposed and partly collapsed, as a result of erosion by wind, rain, and vegetation.

While the traditional image of the cabin is one of a rustic wooden home located far away from any trace of society, architects have been experimenting with these conventions alongside newer material and technological considerations to push the boundaries of the ‘cabin’ today. Whether it is by reimagining the aesthetics of the cabin, utilizing advanced fabrication techniques to modernize the rustic, or even reconfiguring the log cabin for the city setting, architects and designers have utterly transformed traditional cabin architecture for a more contemporary existence. Below, we consider 10 innovative cabins that achieve this transformation through experiments with different materials and construction technologies. While each explore different strategies and functions, many share similarities in their use of prefabrication systems, their dedication to sustainability, and their close attention to and optimization of specific material properties.

Over the last decade, Chile’s startup scene has positioned itself as one of the leaders in the region. Ambitious government programs mixed with a booming generation of young innovators have turned the small South American country into an internationally renowned hub for emergent tech entrepreneurs, reaping an important number of interesting and successful technological products. Fintual is one of those groups of entrepreneurs—founded in 2016 and live since 2018—their goal is to bridge the gap between financial investment tools and the general non-savvy public, by way of technology and a candid and straightforward strategy of communication with their clients, sprinkled with a healthy dose of humor. As of 2020, they manage funds for 47 thousand clients at more than 425 million USD—a big jump from the 7 thousand clients and 44 million the year before, which meant they needed more people on their team and eventually a bigger space.

Between a miniature of the main production system that sustains the nutrition of the human race and a habitable enlargement of the vegetable container as a piece of design. By confronting the encounter between these two realities in an urban setting, the need to insert the vegetal world into the domestic space is manifested, going beyond the ornamental purpose or the ephemeral productive simulations.

In the surroundings, a forest, typical of the transversal valleys, converges with the coast that was originally a productive beach, and is currently being developed as a holiday location. The brief responds to the needs of four different families, 14 people in total, that decided to make a second home together. Therefore, multiple and divergent preferences of the different owners are congregated in one volume, reduced to 111m2.

Fabricated from a series of triangles linked by a ridge beam and purlins, wooden trusses are structurally advantageous due to their high strength-to-weight ratios and corresponding ability to support long spans. However, these structural components can also be used for aesthetic ends, and when left exposed, can complexify, beautify, and open an interior space.
