For centuries, burial practices across various cultures have connected honoring the deceased to the earth, with cemeteries firmly grounded in the soil as a symbol of eternal peace. Yet, as discussed in one of our articles, No More Room for the Living or the Dead: Exploring the Future for Burials in Asia, land shortages in densely developed urban areas present significant challenges to traditional burial practices, especially as societies like Japan face an aging population. Given these spatial constraints, how can above-ground cemeteries and columbariums be designed to provide a dignified, tranquil resting place while respecting cultural values?

The presented project is the result of a refurbishment of a single-family residential building in a residential area of the city center of Cuneo (North of Italy). The house is a mansion of the Italian typology called "dei Ferrovieri", which starting in 1908, the State Railways Social Security, began to populate Italy and the areas adjacent to the historical centers through this building campaign, Then, subsequently, all these buildings have been incorporated in the city tissue. The building in question is from 1921, it is a preserved and bound property by the Committee of Architectural Heritage which protects its facades and external appearance. It is, therefore, to be considered an interior design intervention.

The project is generated around this space, and passing through this bright tunnel is enveloping and emotional. The structure is in dry construction and the assembly of wooden and metal elements generates the connection between the different operational areas. In this project, we were interested in the genesis of permeable, penetrable surfaces, where light and air can pass through, and do not clearly define a volume or a function.

The building, located halfway up the hill of Gassino T.se (Turin), is the result of a replacement project with expansion for the construction of a single-family villa with attached farmhouse. On the lot, there was a rural building dating back to the 1930s but modified and enlarged in later times, without significant architectural and historical features. The intervention included the complete demolition of the existing building and the construction of a new one for residential and agricultural use, built largely on the footprint of the existing structure. The aim was to identify client’s aspirations developing responses to their desire for quality and architectural sustainability, combining the needs of an educational farm open to the public with the possibility of enjoying intimacy in the context of the family.

This architectures have facades realized with bricks or white plaster. Many of this buildings are covered with Apricena’s stone in the low part. Usually they are closed by a flat roof or by a pitched roof, not very sloped. The part that comes out of the roof is always restricted according to the mediterranean house tipology. “Casa d’angolo” was born in this contest. A building based on a rectangular plan and realized starting from an old storage.

Fast-forward a few centuries, and steel remains as one of the most crucial materials in architecture. The second one has been the aim to reach an high quality in informal spaces applying care to the construction details and choice of materials. The situation at the beginning of the design process was presented by an apartment with a high degree of obsolescence resulting need to do major renovation work at the level of distribution and systems. From the start has been done a parallel work between architectural design and thermal/acoustic design, this last one directly followed by the client, which is a professio- nal in the sector.

A new house has put down its roots in Turin. Its structure is in steel and it looks like a forest where trees are rooted in terraces with irregular shapes, ponds are crossed by footings and lush gardens cover the roofs. The building has been thought as a living forest, a house on the trees like the houses children dream of and sometimes build.

The project for this small detached house at Orsara di Puglia, is the outcome of a close collaboration between client and architect (lengthy discussion between brothers, to be precise). It is a very simple volume: a white cube measuring 10 meters on each side, excavated, squared, geometrical, apparently abstract, but actually similar to many buildings in the countryside of Foggia.
