The aquatic environment has always fascinated dreamers and researchers. Around 1960, in the midst of the fierce space race of the Cold War, French explorer Jacques Cousteau developed equipment such as the Aqualung to unravel the depths of the sea, which remained as unexplored as outer space itself. He even stated that in 10 years we could occupy the seabed as “aquanauts” or “oceanautas,” where it would be possible to spend long periods extracting mineral resources and even growing food. Sixty years later, the seabed is still reserved for few, and mankind has been more concerned with plastic in the oceans and rising sea levels than colonizing the ocean floor. But being close to a body of water continues to attract most people. Whether out of interest or in response to risks of flooding and over-population, some have turned to utopian proposals and floating architecture, examples of which have been featured in the ArchDaily project archive. But what are the fundamental differences between building houses on land versus on water, and how do these buildings remain on the surface rather than sinking?

In the Western Ring Road zone of Amsterdam, on the Gerrit Mannourystraat, Koschuch Architects designed two sturdy residential buildings. By making the grid facade load bearing, the floor plans can be adapted in the long term (‘Open Building’). PV cells are installed on the green roofs, rainwater is collected, and shower water is filtered to irrigate the plants on the balconies (Smart Roof). High sustainability ambitions regarding the long-term adaptability of the buildings, an overall reduction of CO2, careful use of water, and a love for detail are the pillars of this pioneering project. Open Building.

Wood, steel, bombings and lent constructions from nearby villages literally give color to the history of this area. Architect Erik Moederscheim: “We have interpreted the design for the extension namely as a new layer adding to the history of the bridge and the city, as if it were the eighth bridge. A bridge that visibly and tangibly symbolizes a new step in the bridging of the river the IJssel, with the rediscovery of the water as the main theme.”

The town centre of Vathorst, in a new suburban development near Amersfoort, has developed along an existing, scenic ribbon. It is characterized by a lively mix of functions. Together with a library, a theatre and a school, this project with shops and apartments forms a square around a 150 year old oak tree.

Built on the far end of Amsterdam’s new artificial islands called IJburg, the apartment building “Emmy Andriesse” takes full advantage of scenic, environmental conditions. The terraced building allows beautiful views over the open water in the north and over a newly developed city park in the east. The south orientated terraces are spacious and a special one meter wide grass filled planter is used as railing providing privacy as well as an outdoor garden atmosphere. From the outside these long green lines give the building a sawa like expression.
