Quinta de Velude is situated on a hillside facing the River Douro. Abandoned for 40 years, the Quinta stands out for its extraordinary history and its manor house with a baroque chapel. Since the Quinta and its manor house have remained abandoned, its authenticity has never been distorted. Because of this abandonment, the Quinta became completely isolated and forgotten, and its heritage value, which its history alone would justify, has never been identified. In the 14th century, the Quinta was attributed to the Morgados de Velude as an honour whose original extension led to the River Douro. Since then, it has belonged to the family and the first known will is of the noblemen Vasco Esteves de Matos and Madalena Gil, the founders of the Chapel of St Anthony (1388).

Architects are known for returning from travel with more photos of buildings than people and for having an esoteric vocabulary of their own. Of course, these are clichés that are not always true. But something that unites most designers is the tendency to pay attention to each detail that makes up a project, be it the material that covers the facade, the junction between different floors, how the doors open, the type of window frame, how the forms were put together for concreting, and more. But a detail that often goes unnoticed – and that makes a huge difference in interior design – is baseboards.

They are not made to be a dwelling in a remote location where they may be abandoned. They can, however, meet basic requirements such as relaxing and writing a book on a tower-like structure and staying there. Its structure is reduced to the most basic, the concrete block, which represents unity, size, and the place where everything is formed, in its multiplication.

Casa em Amares results from the rehabilitation and expansion of an ancient country house, dating back to the 18th century, located in a low-density residential area interspersed with agricultural and forested land, close to Serra do Gerês. The project's main challenges resulted from the need to adapt the existing construction to contemporary housing standards and demands, without compromising the formal and temporal coherence of the ensemble. The proposal is thus divided into two volumes, of which autonomous expressions result from their specific temporal circumstances. This duality also reflects itself at a functional level, through distinct notions of domestic space that coexistent and articulated in the same house.

This project consists in the transformation of a small apartment inserted in a building of the XIX century located in the historical center of Porto. Given the small dimension of the space and the customer's specifications to increase the useful area, the proposal is based on the design of a mezzanine over the central space, taking advantage of the high ceilings characteristic of the constructions of this period. This intermediate floor thus integrates a bedroom, an additional and open space over the living room, and above all private and separate. The lower floor develops into the living and dining room, which also includes the kitchen. The remaining service spaces like the bathroom and storage are concentrated in the surplus area, interior and under the bedroom.

Not only is history built from its visual universe, but form is also a common language that brings together architects from all over the world in a collective conversation. In this exhibition, which proceeds from a potentially infinite repository, three architects—Johnston Marklee, Nuno Brandão Costa, and Office KGDVS—build a dialogue that challenges notions of authorship and the limits of form.
