41 people were killed in the 2003 Casablanca bombings. The terrorists all came from the Sidi Moumen district of the city. These impoverished neighborhoods are often fertile ground for this kind of tragedy (crime, unemployment, extremism...). Consequently, access to decent housing, quality education, and adequate public services are crucial solutions to restoring basic "social justice". In this regard and within the "Cities Without Slums" program, the social housing built in Ben M'sik saw the light of day to provide better living conditions for 240 families from the slums of "Douar Khlifa" located not far from the project site.

This project involves creating an extension of an artist studio for a famous Moroccan painter Mr. Abdelkebbir Rabi’. The project takes place in the old colonial center of Casablanca, close to the city's biggest public park and the splendid “sacré coeur” church. Mr. Rabi’ used to work with bi-chromatic drawing or painting, he trades between figurative and abstractive representation. As all his work revolves around shadows and light, his only request was about natural light, and natural materials with a neutral atmosphere that will don’t disturb him at work.

The scope of this project was to bring openness to the garden by letting the exterior communicate with the interior and vice versa. This geared the architecture DNA towards the use of a specific material palette: white exterior walls, exposed concrete ceilings, oak wood, white perforated façade panel, black perforated metal interior staircase, zellige tiles and also plants.

As the city, we wanted a simple white house, that combines both modernism and functionalism. The clients were involved in the making of the house which made both the design concept and the site built challenging. The ergonomic and the everyday use were the main things to care of in the design pattern.
