The memory of the city: Public Garden with a low threshold. Wansanttrak Community Center was designed to brighten up the corner of the alley in Wansandong and create a gathering space to share the lives of neighbors. Various architectural ideas were developed to create a comfortable space for residents. As a small public building, the main concept was to make the building more approachable and open to the public. We proposed to design the alley in front along with the building. Starting with the design of the alley, the architecture is intimately intertwined with the surrounding space creating a lively flow to the village.

'White edge on brick' is the small mixed-use building with five separate rental housing units and a two-story owner’s house and a retail space on the ground floor. The site for this project is located in a little old planned town, which is a part of the verge of the capital city, Seoul. As the continuous growth of the city, the boundary of Seoul is changing and the town is being redeveloped.

'Cornerstone' is the small mixed-use building with 5 separate housing units and a cafeteria on ground-floor. It is located in a newly developed residential area full of buildings with similar height and shape, and occupies the very first lot of one monotonous block on edge, facing commercial area on the opposite side. I wanted the project reflect this site condition to stand as an ambiguous alien between residential and commercial block, as a heterogeneous thing from neighboring repetitious buildings.

On early 2014, a client visited the office. She was on her early 30s, married 2 years ago, and has never lived outside Seoul. She was planning exodus from vicious circle of debt. (Many newly married couple of Seoul begin with small house of high monthly rent, and move to a bigger house after having baby. This means that the amount of debt grows dramatically before the couple's paying back the money.) To make a shift from the vicious circle to the virtuous one, she and her husband decided to start a rural life with her single mother.

The ground of ‘a pointing hand’ form is seated on the top of the hill in Sangsu-dong area, Seoul. Just as like the name of the region meaning ‘the town above the river’, it is looking down Han River from the top. A cliff of 6m height is dividing ‘the pointing finger’ part above and ‘the hand part below. These differences of narrow/wide and above/below parts in one small ground worked as obstacles from the initial phase of designing already, and the architects should have walked through.

The site area of this project faced three sides to the road, meaning all four facades of the building equally important.

The site Located is limited to a very small area, small even for a house: 8 meters wide and 20 meters long, with a 175 m2 area. Nine studio apartments had to be packed into this 5 story multiplex housing building. As is the case for all rental housing in Korea, the building had to be profitable and economical and yet the building should be pleasant and even pleasing for the residents.
