The project was built from containers, situated at Orenda · Chongming Island, Shanghai, China. Its isolated location on open grassland, as well as the narrow interior spaces of the containers, made the project challenging. In order to give the ten ordinary staggered containers unique aesthetics, the designers boldly extended the inner space of the containers outwards, through creating a void box connected to each closed container.

HEMU Headquarters is situated at Jiading District, Shanghai. The original building was built in the 1960s or 1970s, with a yard. As an annexe of Huilongtan Park which boasts a history of over 400 years, the building features a two-storey structure of bricks and timber, gray bricks and tiles with green moss on the surface as well as lots of archways. The yard is surrounded by century-old trees, echoing with jingling bells of Yingkui Mountain nearby. It’s a fantastic place where people can enjoy birds’ twitter, fragrance of flowers and a fantastic view of lush trees.

Among the scattering design practices, Li Man·Shen Mi Ji hotel is a special isolated existence. Its modern ink painting style brings the most poetic and innovative annotation for a renovation space.

By chance the client found Xu Xujun two years ago. After a few hours' communication at the first meeting, the client requested that Xu Xujun provide a brief proposal first. At that night, Xu Xujun drew a rough draft by hand: elements of Oriental Zen were added to the overlapping connected buildings , and Tibetan style of ancient city Shangri-La was taken as a smooth transition, thus a simple hostel which presents the beauty of nature was gradually shown. The client thought highly of the draft, thus a story about the original design of KARESANSUI was unfolded...
