As one of the leading healthcare providers in the country, Kaiser Permanente has created a new School of Medicine to train the next generation of leaders in medicine. Kaiser Permanente sought a school unfettered by the traditional pedagogy of academic medical centers but also detached from typical campus amenities. This pushed the design team to reimagine the typology entirely. How does one envision, on a tight urban site, all the components needed for first-rate medical education?

Kraemer Radiation Oncology Center / Yazdani Studio of CannonDesign

Traditionally, radiation treatment centers are placed below ground to accommodate heavy equipment and to shield radiation. These spaces serve a very functional purpose, and are typically barren of natural light and amenities that support the psychological and emotional needs of cancer patients. Kaiser Permanente did not want to build that type of facility. Instead, the health system sought to create a state-of-the-art medical center that brought its oncology radiation services above ground and into the light.

A collaboration of EDA Architects, Yazdani Studio of Cannon Design, and Arup, the University of Utah's newest project for the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute - "Lassonde Studios" - has broke ground. Slated as a space to live, work, and create, the building supports the mission to make the Lassonde Institute an international destination for student entrepreneurs, innovators and “makers.” The Studios will open for students in fall of 2016.

Chaparral Science Hall / Yazdani Studio of CannonDesign

The building opened last fall and serves students from throughout the College of Science and Mathematics who have greater access to new and improved lecture halls on the first floor and computer labs throughout the building. The building is home to the Department of Biology’s office as well as much of the department’s offerings, including teaching and research activities. Chaparral Hall includes 18 research labs, nine introductory teaching labs and 13 lecture rooms in addition to a DNA sequencing lab and a microscopy suite. The building has two computer labs equipped with high-speed “hard wired” and wireless connections. The building also supports fiber optic data transmission required by high-bandwidth instruments like the new confocal and electron microscopes.

UCSD Price Center East / Yazdani Studio of CannonDesign

The plan of the University of California at San Diego's existing student center, the Price Center, was developed with an "introverted" configuration - a central courtyard bordered on three sides by all of the building's program elements facing inward - that established a powerful sense of place and a hub for dining, socializing, and events. When the university's growth necessitated an expansion of the Price Center, our solution was to create an "extroverted," highly permeable addition offering many points of entry and features such as plazas and monumental staircases that engage the building's surroundings and enrich the street experience.

The Museum of Tolerance (MOT) focuses on issues of tolerance, rights and diversity. The Museum aims to confront and promote a dialogue on these issues in a hands-on interactive manner. To build upon it initial success the MOT aimed to reposition the Museum from an experiential learning center into a cultural center for the Westside of Los Angeles. Designed in two phases - the first completed phase focuses on the interior spaces of the Museum while the second phase, in progress, expands the Museum.
