Since the declaration of the Quebrada de Humahuaca as a World Heritage Site, the growth of tourism and the subsequent rise in the cost of living have led to the emergence of economic activities that exist in constant tension with pre-existing peasant practices. In the town of Tilcara, this transformation has resulted in the displacement of diverse building techniques by the introduction of alternative forms of construction and valuation. In this context, the project proposes to work with the knowledge, spatial characteristics (centered around courtyards), and materials (adobe, stone, earth mortars, and plasters) that characterize local architecture. By establishing continuity with regional building practices from a contemporary perspective, the choice of vernacular materials and techniques infuses the management and construction process of the complex with a sense of place rooted in the territory.
