Flanked by mountains, nestled into limestone rock formations, and looking across Lake Pearson to a perfectly symmetrical view of Sugarloaf Mountain is Flockhill Homestead, designed by Warren and Mahoney. Elevated within a valley alone in the landscape, the Homestead is settled within 36,000 acres on a high-country station. Flock Hill Station itself derives its name from these rock formations. Our design celebrates and references the early habitation of the landscape by adopting an architecture that consists of heavy masonry elements embedded in the landscape.

Te Ara Ātea is a new library and community facility located in Rolleston near Christchurch. The anchor project for the future Rolleston Town Centre, Te Ara Ātea acts as a beacon, not only in location but for the diverse and growing community it serves. The project has a strong community focus and challenges the typical preconceptions of a ‘library’, in keeping with its gifted name which means ‘unobstructed trail to the world and beyond.’

It was 2014 and Mendes was traveling to a workshop early in the design of the building.
Our ‘hubbing’ strategy combines key functions into a single vibrant centre, delivering significant efficiencies and bringing diverse users together. La Trobe University Sports Park at La Trobe University, Melbourne, has been designed as the first purpose-built facility of its kind in Australia. The sprawling site integrates academic research and teaching functions with world-class playing facilities for professional, state, and community clubs. We were awarded the project following a competitive tender. A high-level masterplan had already been drawn up, situating buildings in multiple locations across an enormous site. Among the first things we did was to interrogate this plan with clients and stakeholders through extensive consultation and user group workshops.

New Zealand’s aged population is growing with people living longer, healthier lives and this is creating considerable demand for housing and care alternatives during retirement. The first stage of ‘Gulf Rise’ in Red Beach is the realisation of Metlifecare’s long-term vision for retirement living in New Zealand. Warren and Mahoney were charged with an ambitious brief to design a village that would potentially become the new benchmark for quality designed retirement villages. The strong design focus was placed on human bulk and massing, context, overall scale, diversity in the residential offering, and strong community engagement breaking the stereotypical norm of large overwhelming blocks onsite.

As part of their Blueprint for Recovery, the government designated a new Justice and Emergency Services Precinct to be one of 16 ‘anchor projects’ needed for regeneration. The Precinct was to be the first major government building completed in the city’s rebuild.

The overall inspiration for the community center came from the unique landscape of the Wairarapa region, the heroic town founders and the vibrant local community. The restoration and extension of the 106-year-old Martinborough Town Hall into a bustling, multi-purpose community hub is at the core of this project.

The new University of Auckland student accommodation campus is located at Carlaw Park, adjacent to the Auckland Domain. The student accommodation campus has direct pedestrian connections to one of Auckland’s most beautiful natural parks. With an abundance of generous open space in the Auckland Domain, private open spaces have also been designed between the campus buildings to strengthen the community/student realm for residents.
