As part of the Samsung (China) Semiconductor Corporate Social Responsibility program, Yuan Architecture Studio has completed a series of three rural school libraries since 2020 at the foothills of the Qinling Mountains. The first, "Zhongnan Book Pavilion" (2021), revitalized its campus environment; the second, "Qin Feng Book Pavilion" (2023), created a shared space bridging school and village life. Through these projects, we recognized that rural construction requires a clear distinction between architect-controlled elements and open-ended components—inviting teachers and students to co-shape their environment. This approach aligns closely with N. John Habraken's concept of "Open Building."

Located in “The eighteen junior high school of Xi'an Hi-tech Zone”, the “Qinfeng Library” is the second “Rural School Library” of the Hope Project in Shaanxi completed by the team in cooperation with the “Samsung (China) Social Welfare Program”. The library continues the design concept of “integration and mutualization” with the environment, but also experimentally explores the value of the following two aspects: 1. Opening and sharing - The construction site is located in the southeast corner of the school, adjacent to two major rural roads to the east and south. The purpose of the outward location is to allow the building as a link that can serve both the inside and outside of the school and benefit the neighboring villagers.

Background
In 2009, Min Le Yuan area inside Xi’an City wall constructed in Ming dynasty was demolished and transformed into a mixed commercial and residential urban block. In recent years, with the relocation of the city's commercial center to the outside of the Ming city wall, the commercial vitality of the region has declined sharply. However, the emergence of the Internet economy has brought new possibilities for the development of the area. A large number of small businesses have settled in and the business model has been spontaneously updated. At the same time, the adjacent railway station and subway station as an important gathering place improve the growth of new business formats. In this context, our client proposec to transform a 40 square meter apartment into a short-term lodging.

Background
The Banpo International Art District was the largest textile industry base of Northwest China which was built by the former Soviet Union during the First Five-Year Plan period. The main buildings of Art District are the site of the first printing and dyeing factory of Northwest China (Tanghua Yiyin), which was built in 1961. After that, the textile area gradually withdrew from the historical stage but left behind tens of thousands of square meters of high-quality Soviet-style factory buildings.

It is a typical representative of “Guan Zhong” villages and contains a spiritual characteristic reminiscent of the traditional homes of the Shaanxi people.
