Text description provided by the designers. Moat’s Corner draws on an inspired vision and a commitment to an established setting. Refined to a point of tranquil precision, forming an interactive haven, with which to experience the life and energy that surrounds it. The site’s layered history began with a pioneering family, after whom Moat’s Corner was named. A gnarled cypress lined driveway is a historic cue to the first settlers on this rural property within the coastal town on Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula. Next came almost 70 years of a gardener’s cultivating and collecting, resulting in a rambling and diverse array of flora across 5 acres of the 53-acre stretch.

Sorrento House 1, the latest coastal project from Vibe Design Group, is the Australian Beach house reborn. The building presents a modest, yet sinuous face to passers by. A well-honed palette of materials is introduced, their application modulated masterfully and subtly; the mark of an experienced hand. Timber battening twists to become shuttering for windows behind. A cast concrete wall articulates the point of entry. A low-slung, angular roof constructed from 18m sheets of custom Colorbond is punctuated by a cast concrete chimney; stylish protection from any seaward weather. If the exterior is uniquely Australian in vernacular, the interior might just as easily be Northern European or Japanese. The synthesis of timber, cast concrete and steel is sensitive and assertive in equal measure. Each material is given a role, an opportunity to shine solo, and contribute in concert. Silken timber renders concrete textural, and luxurious, in return.

The client purchased an existing run-down home with the intention of transforming it into a striking contemporary styled residence. Although unattractive to look at, the existing residence was of sound construction and worthy of part retention and utilization. Unlike their previous home that they described as too stark & cold, the client’s called for a liveable family home with sophistication and warmth.

The client’s approached us to design their ‘dream home’. Located in Beaumaris, the subject site offered a sense of locality with an appreciation of the bay through a perpendicular street. The client brief called for a family home to temporarily accommodate their children who were nearing adulthood, and visiting international guests. Preference was made for the master bedroom to be located on the lower story along with the primary living spaces.

The clients came to our office with the intention of moving into property development. The common ground was that they were focused on presenting projects with high design content, supporting a different visual approach. In the early design phase we were looking to create an open, more interactive street presence, which led to a very different design response.
