When the family showed us the lot for the first time, they did so with some skepticism. "Are you sure a house can fit here? It's a very narrow lot," they said. But beyond those doubts, they also saw that this parcel offered them the opportunity to change their lives, and they entrusted us with the challenge.

A well-traveled couple who have lived in other European cities decide to return to Sabadell. They have chosen the father’s hometown to raise their two children. They want to live in the city center so they won’t need a car, where they can stroll or make a quick trip to the market. They prefer neighborhood life to a big yard in a residential development. We tore down a building that could no longer be renovated on a pedestrian street in the city center.

Granera, far away enough to lose cell service, close enough to get there and back for lunch. A century-old farmhouse, the ideal place to bring the whole family together in summer, for Christmas, or just on a regular Sunday. These gatherings are the demand, and the farmhouse is the setting that needs to be prepared for them.

Another row house, another four-person family, another set of parents, and another two children. Another challenge to take on. The design deals with an issue that is characteristic of this kind of project: is it better to refurbish the original building or tear it down and build something new? In this case, the answer is unclear. On the one hand, the structure at the back of the house has been damaged due to a lack of maintenance on the roof. The stairwell also needs to be torn out to make room for a parking area (one of the client’s non-negotiable requests). That requires a rather large surface area of new construction. On the other hand, the original building has the charm of a 100-year-old house, and the rest of the structure and building enve-lope can be kept and refurbished.

A couple from Barcelona decide to leave the big city. They’ve realized that a house with a yard in the capital is beyond their means. In the Vallès, they find an opportunity to fine-tune the project and design it to suit their needs. They choose a house. It’s a simple construction: a row house, all on a single ground floor.

We are hired by a family from Mataró. We easily agree on a layout with the day-use area on the ground floor: parking for one car, bathroom, living room, and kitchen-dining room. Then the bedrooms are located on the first floor: the parents’ room with a bathroom and dressing room, the children’s rooms with access to a terrace, plus a multi-use area for study or play. The working area (or home office) and study are on the second floor, for the whole family, opening onto another large terrace. The factors that drove the design were the size of the plot and its surroundings. The typology is a row house with an ample width (5.25 m, specifically) but the plot is not very deep. This means that the backyard, normally one of the highest quality spaces in a house of this kind, is quite small. Plus, it opens onto the interior of the block, which is densely built.

The unique characteristics of this row house come from a very narrow plot (3.8 meters wide) and a very long backyard. The clients, a couple with two children, need the standard program for a family of four. Within the volume of the existing building, we agree to put in three bedrooms of similar sizes and proportions. On the ground floor, looking over the street, the older son’s bedroom. On the second floor, two more bedrooms: one for the couple and the other for the younger son, each located along one of the façades. The center is occupied by two bathrooms: one on the second floor and another on the ground floor, also for guests. The volume of the building is expanded in order to place the kitchen-dining-living room adjacent to the patio garden, at the same level. A new loft space is added under the roof, which provides an extra multi-purpose room that can be used as a study or as a fourth bedroom. The original staircase is maintained. There is no need for a parking area.
