The property is located outside the city of Lucerne in a slightly elevated position with a view of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding mountains. The existing building had considerable energy and architectural deficiencies and didn't meet the clients' demands, which is why they decided to build a new replacement. The existing basement, including ancillary rooms, was retained and extended to include a garage parking space. The existing garden level was demolished and replaced by a new building.

The plot is located on the edge of the settlement with transition to agricultural green areas, isolated industrial facilities, and highways. The compact volume of the house appears closed to the street. The asymmetrical gable roof acts as a borrowing from the traditional residential houses in the immediate vicinity.

The initial concept is derived from the existing park like scenery. Like scattered stones, the non- orthogonal buildings gather around a central place. The group of buildings consists of a single family house, double single family houses and multi-family houses which hardly differ from the architectural language in size and proportions. The irregular shaped buildings provide a huge variation of visual angels and perspectives.

The Villa “Zum tüfen Graben” lies in a cove at the lake Zurich. The whole ensemble consisting of the villa, a barn and a classical garden with two garden pavilions is protected by the preservation order. The villa is divided into two apartments; one of the apartments is let. The clients asked Urben Seyboth Architects for a study for additional accommodation units. The study revealed that the depth of engagement of the historic and protected structure of the villa would be massive and the costs, in consideration of the statutory requirements by the preservation order, disproportional. Urben Seyboth Architects advised the client to build a new construction on the empty space located eastward of the villa.

This single family house from the 60ies is a fine contemporary witness of the avant-garde at that time. The then usual mix of plastered masonry and concrete is skillfully applied and shows a lot of perfect details.
