A new construction pergola structure for shaded seating and community gathering was built for the new Riverside Park overlooking the Charles River. The design challenge was to conceptualize multiple approaches for re-designing the exterior envelope of Harvard University’s elevator headhouse and exhaust shaft that protruded through the site from a recently constructed underground parking garage (parking garage and headhouse structure by others).

An adaptive re-use and historic restoration project that transformed the Lawrence School, built in 1856, into 16 residential loft-style condominiums. The design highlights the qualities of the building by leaving exposed brick at the interior, and re-establishing the tall windows to allow sweeping views to the City of Boston.

Shade Pergolas and an Outdoor Pavilion for performance and community gathering are designed for an urban park in North Carolina. The form and structure reference the heritage of the local textile industry - its patterned fabric and the motion of the textile loom equipment.

This speculative development was built on a rear parcel with restricted views to the street, code restricted openings for windows, and less desirable views of the adjacent lots. The design re-directs the focus to an interior environment with a sun filled “skylight stair hall” and “rear light shaft” that brings natural light to all corners of each floor.
