Campbell House is the adaptive reuse of an 1890s early Federation house set within a Heritage Conservation area. The integrated design approach of architecture-heritage-interior stitched together unifies the contemporary office use and the original building. Through the simplicity of materiality and bespoke architectural details, the ‘Campbell House’ project intertwines the relationship between new and old.

Down on the flat sand plain at the base of the Balmoral rock escarpment, a new house is slotted into the established garden that our client wished to keep and develop further as part of the overall concept for their property. The house is organised along a central circulation spine, punctuated by a frangipane tree at one end, and a contemporary Australian sculpture at the other. From within, its room-forms ‘press’ out into the landscape setting. The perimeter of the house is extended by a series of courtyards which disintegrate the otherwise pure form of the building. These extended areas draw the sun deep into the plan throughout the duration of the day, answering our client’s wish for abundant natural light on a site that is enclosed by nine other dwellings.

The building at 75 Myrtle Street is significant for its association with the nineteenth and early twentieth century industrial activities that took place in Chippendale. The two storey inter-war factory building located at 75 Myrtle Street, Chippendale was constructed c1925 for J.C. Goodwin & Co Ltd, glass importers, bevellers and silverers, who were first established in Chippendale in 1875 in a factory on Abercrombie Street. The building has now been remodeled into three purpose built offices located either side of a central courtyard. The Brief called for one large and two small tenancies, the larger tenancy to be accessible via Myrtle Street and the two smaller tenancies to be accessed from the rear of the building, via Dangar Place. Centrally located is a sunlit and naturally ventilated courtyard which features a contemporary cacti and succulent garden that melds with the surrounding pixelated paving. The courtyard has its own structural order, based on the range of glass types used, which links the building to the site’s former factory use. This order is set against the existing structure.

Sound walls and road furniture’ for a new 32km stretch of freeway linking the Hume Highway with the Melbourne Ring Road were designed in association with Landscape Architects Taylor Cullity Lethlean. Artist and sculptor Robert Owen was also creatively involved in the concept design and modelling of all the elements.

Kane Construction, a building company that pursues unusual and inventive building projects, wanted their Sydney office building to reflect this interest.
