West of Lake Roxen, just outside Linköping, stands the ruin of Stjärnorp Castle, originally built between 1654 and 1662, most likely designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. The estate comprised a four-storey stone main building with a stair tower facing the park to the west, and two wings facing Lake Roxen to the east. The castle is depicted in Erik Dahlbergh's Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna from 1697.

A schoolyard with a playground inspired by hexagonal forms found in the existing building, and areas of kept natural landscaping has been created on the premises bordering nearby Enbacken Park, allowing for shared use between the two.

Tengbom´s new office is located in Hagastaden, a vibrant neighborhood close to Stockholms city center in an old former Factory from 1934. From the entrance, the visitor encounters a welcoming and dynamic ”Arena” with an exhibition space, inviting touchdown workstations, sofa groups, a ping pong table, a long group table, an open kitchen, and a library. Instead of a traditional reception, we have a mobile host who welcomes and guides our guests. The Arena also works well for larger events and is big enough for the whole office to congregate with two drop-down projector screens enabling presentations. A large skylight sits above the long group table. The sides of the deep recess are clad in polished stainless steel with a soft rippled structure that spreads daylight throughout the space.

With “steel socks” and a more open interior volume, the temporary market hall from Östermalmstorg in Stockholm has been transformed into a sustainable padel hall in Mölnlycke, east of Gothenburg. Over the course of a four-year renovation, the market traders inside Östermalm Market Hall were moved to a temporary hall out on the square. The largely pre-fabricated building, designed by Tengbom to be easily assembled and disassembled, was constructed with a frame made of glulam columns and laminated veneer lumber (LVL) beams, as a lightweight construction was necessary due to the underground station below the square. Passers-by and visitors alike could still cross the levels of the square on the market hall’s sloping floors.

It has a unique triangular shape and the exposed wooden framework is clad in glass façades with black steel moulding. The garage can hold up to 1200 of the daily commuters’ bicycles at once, with the two floors connected by a wooden ramp, making it possible to ride your bike between floors.

The Municipality of Helsingborg has witnessed a sharp increase in traffic to and from the city. Looking forward to 2020, it is estimated that daily visitors will increase from the current figure of 22,000 to 32,000. This is a pressure that Knutpunkten – which was designed by Ivar Krepp in 1984–1991 – could not handle in its current state, which is why the decision was made to create a new exit and approach at the root of the track’s southern extension. Furthermore, the southern entrances were in a worse condition than the northern ones, which affected the flow of pedestrian traffic. Knutpunkten is currently undergoing a transformation and renovation, yet another task that fell on us.

Östermalm’s Square was home to a thriving market trade until the municipality banned the sale of fresh produce outdoors in order to reduce health risks. In 1888 market trade moved in to the newly completed Market Hall on an adjacent site and the square lost its original function. With the erection of a temporary Market Hall directly on the square we are able to contemplate an alternative urban reality that could have been the result of a decision to retain the market’s central location in this busy thorough fare.

The District Court in Alingsås is a typical brick building from 1899, designed by architect Adrian Crispin Pettersson. It is placed a few of blocks from the town centre in a district lined with large villas and a school from the early twentieth century. In the second half of the 1950s a wing in brick was added. Just over half a century later it was time for the next extension, designed by Tengbom. A new epic date was added to Alingsås District Court’s history when we were awarded the PLÅT prize for 2016 for this extension in zinc. The yearly PLÅT seminar is a major event devoted to metal sheeting and architecture.

A paved path leads up to the broad, white entry door, which provides a strong contrast to the otherwise completely black façade. A large window over the entry door reveals that the milieu on the other side of the door will be light and airy, and that is precisely what the hall is. The unique layout is truly striking when one looks back over the entrance area from the hall. The ceiling height - a massive 4.80 m - creates fantastic space and leads the eye all the way through the living room and out to the exciting cliff-top areas that so naturally surround the generous wooden terrace. The large window and sliding door sections erase the boundary between the living room and the terrace and the spaces almost feel like they flow together. The design of the sitting room on the upper floor, from whose glass railing one can stand and look out over the entry floor, helps create the impression of a very open and appealing layout, despite the clear room-based division into a kitchen, living room, terrace and sitting room.
