Landmark St Kilda pub The Village Belle Hotel has been reborn through a reimagined design by Technē Architecture + Interior Design which opens the historic hotel up to Barkly Street and, just across the road, to the new pedestrian zone on Acland Street. The Technē design contrasts a contemporary beer garden, enclosed in fully operable glazing and robust steel framing, with a restoration of the original Victorian elements of the hotel. A drive-in bottle shop at the rear, on Smith Street, has been removed to make way for 12 boutique apartments.

Garden State Hotel is a superb, purpose-built four-storey bar and hospitality venue at 95 Flinders Lane.Technē has completely rebuilt the venue while preserving its distinctive exterior, itself a heritage Victorian era building that began life as a textile mill in 1896. The design centres on a large multi-level beer garden, a startling oasis in the middle of the CBD’s network of laneways. Reflecting this verdant theme, the name Garden State Hotel borrows Victoria’s century-old state title, ‘The Garden State’.

A run down heritage showroom in Windsor has become the home of the second restaurant under the banner of local taqueria Fonda Mexican. Demolition of the neglected space uncovered the spectacular shell of the building, and the design was built around highlighting the pre-existing features. This included the beautiful cathedral ceiling and trusses, stained glass windows and other period ornamentation.

Built behind the heritage façade of a landmark property in Melbourne’s Fitzroy, this project retains and restores the original frontage while adding a rear addition with three levels of new living space. Conceptually, the design deals with the intersection of the old and the new through differing modes of visual connection and threshold.
