Following a renovation of this space (=Vision) in 2003 and the extension of the Gallery (=Vision+) in 2010, this time we took the responsibility for a new refurbishment. While responding occasional and continuous requests in the design process, we succeeded keeping coherence in our design idea.

The Japanese title “in kyo” is derived from a calm life apart from the active world for the rest of their days. Excessively ornamented mansions showing off surround the site in a rich green residential area. This modest house concealed its appearance in plant open to a neutral space such as a courtyard, a terrace, a garden, and the sidewalk between outdoor and indoor without steps.

The existing building built along a trunk road in a suburban city, had been converted by ourselves from a jewelry shop into the hairdressers 7 years ago. This time the client asked us to extend the floor area and change the façade to a more inviting design. Therefore we designed the extension by introducing a subtle element, which works in the same way as a veil changes a person's facial expression.
