A couple with two children, long rooted in Amsterdam, approached us with a simple yet generous request: design a home defined by connection — between themselves and their children, while also interacting with the surrounding environment. From that single ambition, they entrusted us with an almost complete carte blanche.

In Amsterdam's Buiksloterham, a former industrial harbour is being converted into a circular, mixed-use urban district. Designed in collaboration with DELVA, we introduce Cityplot Buiksloterham — one, a pioneering approach to urban, landscape, and social regeneration. Initiated during the last global crisis, Cityplot Buiksloterham is an innovative kind of urban planning. Instead of adopting a rigid top-down master plan, we focused on a flexible, collaborative way of thinking, aiming for a resilient urban system that can constantly adapt to the shifting needs and desires of the community.

The island of Oostenburg in Amsterdam was formed together with the neighbouring Oostelijke Eilanden (Eastern Islands) Kattenburg and Wittenburg by draining part of the IJ river. While Kattenburg and Wittenburg became residential areas, Oostenburg maintained its identity as a working island. The history of Oostenburg dates back to when it was a Dutch East India Company shipyard, which later became a workplace for shipbuilder Stork and by 2005 was the site for the INIT building.

In the new urban district of Belvédère in Bordeaux, we're thrilled to unveil the finalized Facette. The design is Studioninedots' response to the request for a place that fosters new ways of working and offers the flexibility, collaboration and diversity essential for today's entrepreneurs. For at a time when work is increasingly untethered from specific times and places, the building's true value lies in its innovative spaces for interaction. Facette boasts a sequence of distinctive collective spaces, leading users from the ground floor, along the facade to the roof terrace. These spaces drive the social community within the building. The building's communal ambition and enticing, multi-purpose spaces set Facette apart as a building that fits today's working needs.

Highnote is a residential tower for starters in Almere and the latest addition to the city skyline. For the design, we came up with a unique feature: a triangular plinth that consists entirely of 'urban rooms'. They are intimate, urban indoor and outdoor spaces, flowing into each other and enticing you to wander through them. Each urban room sparks its own sense of wonder, yet always leaves its use to your imagination.

De Jakoba brings new energy to the Overhoeks neighborhood in Amsterdam-Noord. In 'Manhattan at the IJ', as the new city district which fronts the IJ harbor opposite Central Station is also referred to, De Jakoba introduces one of two new social housing complexes. Making use of form and smart building methods, we realized a powerful and qualitative building: a recognizable place where people live with pride and are willing to take care of.

YCON is a small-scale residential building in our circular urban plan Cityplot Buiksloterham in Amsterdam. Designed from the outside in, YCON features a frontage consisting of outdoor rooms, alternating with staggered stacked gardens. This vertical landscape forms a new, green eye- catcher from the surrounding streets and canals, and creates an environment suited to future-proof living in the city.

Since early 2022, we were looking for a new location to replace our temporary workplace Creative Workspace 1-1-1 in Amsterdam North. At Karperweg in Amsterdam South, we found a warehouse building – anonymous and outdated, but with surprising, raw quality and at one of the city's final fringes. We transformed the building and moved with eight other creative offices from our previous workplace into the new space.

DC Van Hall Office Building / Studioninedots

The impressive workshop building – in which heavy elements for the Dutch railways were manufactured – was built in 1905. Until recently, the building lost more and more of its original architectural qualities and functions. Maintenance was deteriorating, new constructions around the building obstructed the view of and from the workshop and the structure was in need of renewal.

Studioninedots transformed the existing office of housing corporation Lieven de Key in Amsterdam into a sustainable and future-proof headquarters. The corporation's two branches were efficiently merged into the existing building on the Hoogte Kadijk, additionally creating space for new social housing on the site of the other office. Lieven de Key's new head office has a BREEAM In-Use rating of Excellent.

The completion of Westbeat adds a dynamic new link in the public space network of Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Designed by Studioninedots the new housing complex features a public base composed of 86 arches that shape a network of inviting, shared open spaces. Measuring 65 x 50 metres and 8.5 metres high, this superspace literally and metaphorically elevates Westbeat to become a distinguished destination in the city’s densifying urban periphery.

Basisschool Veerkracht / Studio Ard Hoksbergen + Studioninedots

Veerkracht is a multi-cultural primary school in Slotermeer, Amsterdam. Safety, challenge and openness are the main themes in the educational vision of Veerkracht. This has been translated into the layout and orientation of the building. The section with classrooms is "disconnected" from the central section with the main entrance, creating a low-stimulus learning section. This part of the building is orientated to the neighbourhood, and therefore away from the busy main road in front of the building. The windows between the rooms and the corridors are positioned in such a way that working pupils are not disturbed by passers-by, but teachers have a view in the corridor.
