A contemporary interpretation of Subiaco's archetypal character homes, Proclamation House provides an inner-city sanctuary for a multi-generational family. Set within a character retention area of Subiaco, Proclamation House responds to its local context while maximizing a compact building site to suit the needs of its occupants — a professional couple and a parent. The client's open brief called for an immersive, light-filled space with areas for the family to entertain, come together, and find respite, elevating their everyday living rituals.

Subtly referencing the history of the area and surrounding urban fabric, we approached the small inner-city site with intention of maximizing living spaces within the tight perimeter and creating the illusion of a renovated heritage factory despite it being a new build. The home is constructed from red bricks that were sourced from character homes in the neighborhood that had been demolished. The reuse and celebration of this locally sourced material was a cornerstone of the design approach.

The intention for the project was to create an expressive, distinctive and dynamic home. Shutter House is an imaginative and unique new home situated in Wembley, Western Australia overlooking picturesque Lake Monger (traditionally referred to as ‘Keiermulu’ by the indigenous Noongar people). A concrete block structure is enveloped by a delicately layered secondary timber batten 'skin'. An operable façade opens and closes, creating a sense of enclosure and intimacy whilst still allowing unobstructed views to the adjacent lake at the leisure of residents, the vertical profiles cause a dynamic play of light and shadow within.
